Are the 5 lug spindles different from the 4 lugs?

If you mean 5-lug disc brake spindles, then yes, because all the 4-lug spindles were for drum brakes. I'd think all the drum brake spindles are the same, but that's a guess.

I have access to a 5 lug front end but really do not want to remove the spindles unless necessary as it is in a yard and not real accessible. My current setup is 4 lug drum/drum.

First check and see if the 5 lug is a disc brake system. If it is, get it. If not, ain't worth the trouble. 5 lug disc setup is only good reason to go thru the trouble of converting from 4 to 5.
