I'll go out and check that out now.

I'm running on the coil that was allready there. I'll get a new coil tonight.

Welp, you guys were right. I pulled the valve cover off and didn't even have to start it to see the problem. Cylinder 1, the pushrod seems to be to low and it just goes up and down without pushing the rocker, cylinder 4 it looks like the pushrod just came loose and is laying sideways not connected to the rocker, it isn't bent, cylinder 6 the pushrod is bent.

What caused this??? And how do I fix it. I changed the oil, filter, and stuff like that yesterday, and the car seemed to be running good?

    Thanks a bunch guys.

Oh, boy, Jamie. Now you get to have real fun. When I have more time, I send you some additional things to do. It may be later tonight, though. By then, some of these other fine fellers will probably have given you the steps.(y)

Sounds like the lifters froze from sitting too long or timing belt slipped and farked up the valve train? I would say the heads gotta come off to get the scoop and go from there ...

I used to pull the plugs by hand while the engine was running, but after a few jolts, found that I could use my "hot-wire" tester to short out the plug wires to see if I have a dead cylinder. Ground your tester (you know, a handle with a light in it, and a long pointed "nail" on the end, and an alligator clip on a wire at the other end) and poke either at the wire or down into the boot at the distributor. As soon as you touch metal inside the distributor boot, it is grounded and kills the plug wire. Best of all...NO SHOCK!

Then listen for a change in the idle.

I may be too late for this guy, but for future reference...

Jamie, before removing the head do a couple of things first.

Remove the rocker arm assemblies amd soak them in a pan with some Marvel Mystery oil. Coat your valve springs and valve assemblies with Marvel Mystery oil. Remove the spark plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders. Let all of this soak over night.

You can buy a valve lifter puller (or come borrow mine) and pull all the lifters. I believe you can pull them out without removing the head. You should buy new lifters and pushrods.

After everything has soaked for a day, install the lifters, pushrods, and rockers. With the plugs still out of the car, turn the engine over and let the valve train work. Watch it closely. If it appears to working fine. Put the valve cover on and install the plugs. Drain the oil and replace it with new. Crank the engine and listen very closely. If something does not seem right, kill the engine immediately. If all is well, let it run a while.

If these steps work, and you're convinced it is working fine, then flush the engine with a can Gunk flush and put on a new filter and new oil. The whole idea of the multiple oil changes is too prevent crap from getting in the oil pickup and pump. This may seem like overkill to some, but it is my methodology.

BTW, these Ford sixes are hard to kill. At the worst, you sghould only have to have a valve job done and maybe a timing chain. You can put the 200 from the other car in there, but it is not a bolt-in; you will have to swap some mounting hardware.

:whew:I hope I covered it all. It's my bedtime. Call me tomorrow night.

Thanks Terry, I don't want to pull the head if I don't have to. I just got back from Auto Zone, $18.99 for 4 push rods... them things ain't cheap!

Ain't no such thing as over kill in my book, anything worth doing is worth doing right...

Guess I'll go out and pull all the old stuff out now. I'll give you a call around 6 tonight, ok? (would like to talk to you before 8 when Auto Zone closes so I can go get what I need and get this thing back together.)

On another note, the car has all new brakes! New lines, wheel cylinders, shoes, got new spring kits for them, new everything. These brakes won't be on here for ever, but its better safe then sorry for now till we switch to discs.

Just went through my dad's toolbox and he has a lifter puller. Reached down in there with it and I can pick the lifters up, but the hole that the push rods go through up top are to small for the lifter to fit through. :cussing: :slap: Done dropped one lifter and now its laying sideways down in there. The heads got to come off. :(

Shall I pull my hair out myself or do one of you guys want to do it for me?

Got to talk to my brother when he gets home from work about what he wants to do. We might go ahead and pull this engine out. Anyone got a 302?

I'm starting to take this personal, I WILL make this car drive. I declare WAR on the Maverick! :bananaman This war ends when I'm driving that car down the road. (y)

dan, those little motors don't have timing belts, they are gear to gear , if it did jump timing it must have awhole lot of miles on it.

Jamie, go ahead and take the head off. This will let you see the cylinders and pistons. You can also do some work on the head such as new valve seals, etc.

Give me a call if you need to.

Engine has been decapitated, cylinders got full of anti freeze cuz I'm stupid, got the anti freeze out, cylinders look ok, can still see a little bit of cross hatch, not much. Got the old lifters out, no bent valves, I'm guessing anti freeze getting in the cylinders ain't gonna hurt nothing as long as I change the oil a few times when I get it going again. Correct?

Anyone know the correct torque specs for the head bolts and the bolts that hold down the rocker arm assembly for when I put it back together?

Ya know, at this point I can't help but laugh at the title of this thread. I'm so tired I can barely see straight. Bed time for me...
