Does anyone else ever feel like selling their car? The feeling has been coming over me more and more lately. Since we moved from Indiana to Wyoming the car doesnt come out of the garage much. I have had the car since I was 16 and I am now 39, so its been in my life longer than just about anything. I can say that I cant picture my garage without the car in it. But the car just doesnt get the attention it use to get, mountain life and chasin critters is my first love (heck the Maverick was my truck at one time). My wife says "no way are you selling", my son who is 11 started to cry when I metioned selling. He said keep it for me, but there is no way I will let him drive it to school with the motor thats in it right now. I know there is one simple fix to driving it more, that is to change the 4.62 gears to a 3.something.

Deep down I dont want to sell, but everytime I head to the garage to work on the hunk of junk, I stop and say naaa I dont want to. The car doesnt cost anything to sit, but insurance and thats not a problem. Money and the wife are no problem either.....I just get this feeling that the car needs something or someone better.

At one of those crossroads of life I guess.......

Don't sell - you will regret it. It maybe something that you aren't too involved with right now, but that is bound to change, especially as your 11 year old gets a little older.

You have an excellent idea about changing the gears to tame it down. You can have an open 2.79 for almost free, and it takes 20 minutes to swap it out.

    Keep your car - JMHO

Keep it for your son. I've been in his shoes, keep the car.

Like you said, it isn't hurting anything sitting in the garage. If your not intrested in it anymore, I say keep it and let your son have at it in a few years.

You sound just like my dad did... "We haven't gone to a car show in over a year and the car hasn't been out of the garage in over 6 months, it dosen't do anything anymore but sit there." A few weeks later he sold it while I was gone visiting my grandparents. :49:

Yes, keep the car for your son. I remember how I felt when Dad sold the Model A just when I was getting old enough to work on a car, it would have made a great rod. But in Dad's defense, after he sold the A he did give me my first car on my 14th birthday, a 56 Ford 2 door and I still have it.

i bought my first maverick when todd was 12... something we could do together (that he admitted he knew nothing about so we never had any arguments...heh heh heh) he now has a real sweet 1970 that has done all the work on himself (aside from paint and bodywork that dale n jean did). sell the car and you may sell away some real quality time with your son.:2cents: (how's that for a guilt trip huh?)

I say keep it for son at least. My parents' got rid of their Maverick when I was 14. I had 2 more years to get my permit. But it had been already sitting for 8 years in our driveway and it was their car since it was new in '72. It broke my heart to see it go. They needed to make room for a dumpster to remodel our house. 15 years later I still wish my parents had kept the car. That is my :2cents: .

All I have to say is, if you have had this car since you were 16, and have now moved it across country with you, and your family supports you keeping, well then you won't know what regret is until you sell it!!! Don't do it! :tsk: :tsk:

I am like a few others here who sold there first Maverick, and since then have replaced it, but there is still a special quaility about that first Maverick that is unlike the others that have come since. Keep it, even if it is under a car cover in the garage for now. Some good advice given about changing out the gears in back. (y)

Thanks guys....I guess looking at the whole picture is what I need to do with the car, I enjoy the thing and have LOTS of memories (yes it is my first car). That and my son enjoys it alot, I am sure it would break his heart if I sold, and I dont want to do that. Just dont know where my mind is on this subject.....heck I even thought about parting it out!!

Change the rear gears. Put in something more "streetable" annd you will hopefully drive it more. In the summer....I hop in mine just to drive to the bank...to the post office....go get milk..whatever. Also drive it in to town on Saturday nite with the family to go eat. Just enjoy it as a second car. Drive to go get ice cream. The key is to just DRIVE IT!! Even if it is only 2 miles a weekend....it will really help. I'll admit...when the orange car is done....I WON'T drive it. I have put in too much work for that just to hop in there and drive it just anywhere......but the white 74 LDO....I'll hop in it and drive it 4 hours to Norwalk, OH....drive 5 hours to Somerset, KY........I'll drive it in the rain, etc. Each car will serve it's purpose....to ME.

    Not For Sale

:tsk:Think hard before selling. If there is no serious reason to force the sale, don't. I washe orginal owner of a '74 Grabber (first new car), a red/black V8 Bucket seat/floor shift car. I sold it in '88 for a new Mustang GT. Everything was OK untill a year later when I saw it at a car show and they won first place. Soon afterwords It hit my like the flu! They would not sell the car back to me and never will. I was never able to fully recover from this mistake and I own a "69 Mach 1 Mustang. After alot of prayer and help from friends, I we found the '74 Grabber I have now in '02 and Its a nice one. I have fully recovered!! You know, I keep an eye out for the red one. If it ever comes up for sale, Id be interested. When its gone, its GONE! Pictures arn't good enough! Joe
