How do you get the windshield wiper switch knob off? Is there a button to push in like the light switch knob? If so, I can't find it. I don't want to break it.
You have to get behind the plastic knob with a small screwdriver or a pick and press the metal tab to release the knob.
NO, the rod stays on the switch. The light switch rod is removable, but not the wiper. I once made a tool to remove the nut but havent seen it in years. I usually use a set of needle noes plyers to take the nut off. The one I made was just a piece of metal that was the same size as the slot across the nut. Kinda like a screwdriver blade, and about 6" long. Then bend the last 1/2 90 degrees and cut a notch in it to go around the shaft. I can draw a picture if you need.
The knob can stay on. I need the switch off the dash. The dash is out of the car. I don't want to break anything.
You have to remove the knob to remove the switch from the dash. The knob comes off, the retaining ring unscrews and slides off the shaft, and the switch comes out of the back of the dash.
What a stupid design. No wonder I couldn't figure it out. When I get the knob off, the rod is sill going to be there. What should I use on the retaining thingie so I won't mess up the chrome? Its not like the light switch where you can use a large screwdriver.
I haven't done it yet but I think an even simpler tool would be to take an old deep well socket that's no bigger around than the spacing on the two slots and cut each side from the bottom of it leaving only enough left on each side to fit into the grooves. If the shaft is too long and comes all the way through the socket just simply grab it with a pair of pliers or vice grips. They normally come off very easy after they get started.
I got it off. It just took a little patience due to not wanting to mess up that plastic chrome. I took two small flat head screw drivers and stuck them it the resessed areas and with a third screw driver I stuck it between the two screw drivers and used it as leverage to turn. Came off without messing up the chrome. Thanks to everyone.
