    I have a 74' maverick that originally was a 250 car and I can't figure out what rearend it has. It has 5 lug axels and it doesn't have the removeable pan on the back and looks like a 9", but everyone here talks about 7 1/2 and 8" rearend. How can I tell them apart?
    Thanks.

    It's an 8"

    7.5 had removable rear cover. 8" has drop out center section. If your lucky there will be a small metal tag under one of the center section nuts with all the info on it. Also the door tag will have an axle code of a 3 or a 6

    I think the 7.5 only came in cars with the 170 cid six. I have had several with the 200 cid six, they all had the 8 inch rear. My brother has a 69 1/2 with a 170, it had the 7.5 inch rear until he put a 250 cid six in it and the first thing he did was spray gears all over the highway. We pulled it home and put an 8 inch rear under it from a 75 that had a 200 in it. He now has a real good running 302 in his Maverick.

    The rear end will definitely be a standard 8". They are very easy to change out if needed, much more so that the type with the inspection plate you mentioned. They are actually very tough rear ends too as long as you don't run then out of oil. Good luck with the car.

    Mavericks and 71-77 Comets never came from the factory with a 9".
    Your 73 will have an 8" rear in it.

    3 = 2.79 ratio
    6 = 3.00 ratio
