So in the future I will have a 347 with dual 3" exhaust with no mufflers. I love the sound of an open v8.

As of now I'm running the stock 200 six.

Being bored and wanting to experiment I decide to take my muffler off just to see how it sounds. At idle it sounds pretty good. From 1000-2000 rpms it sound like some "drunk white trash...I just drank 23 natty lites" crack mobile. Above 2000 it sounds good too.

I miss the loud sound of my old 302. Ill just have to put the muffler back on and deal with it and wait lol, because it actually takes away from the beauty of the car it sounds so bad.

    Why 3-inch?

On my old 302 when I went from 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 pipe it made it sound so much deeper. So I'm going to go whatever the end of the header collector is which I'm assuming will be about 3". Just want to see if that extra 1/2" will make it deeper than the 2 1/2. Just experimenting.

It will be loud & obnoxious, and your low RPM torque will suffer. 3-inch is too big for a 347 unless it's a full race setup. You'll probably have clearance issues as well.

So you think 2 1/2 will be what I need to stick with?

2 1/2 should work just fine. I agree 3" is too much for 347 mainly for street use.

These guys have it right. Higher exhaust gas velocity combats reversion and helps with scavenging. Very important to have enough flow potential without killing that all important gas velocity to improve throttle response and low to mid speed torque. A good dual 2.5" setup can support well over 600 horsepower.

And you will want mufflers unless you want lots of tickets and pronounced hearing loss.

I ran my old 302 without mufflers. It wasnt bad because it was ran out the back bumper. Never got a ticket as I live in the country lol. I just love that v8 sound so waiting on it is killing me. Ill survive but the way the car looks vs the sound ....doesnt match. I'm considering getting a used c4 and seeing if I can get my old 302 running. Its only got 80k on it but has been sitting for a while. Just need a carb and a few other things to get it going. Been putting all my money in stocks so its hard to justify anything not needed atm.

    Hey Satchel:
I have a rebuilt C4 on a skid here at my shop that I had rebuilt when I was completing my
Daughters 72 Maverick. I installed a 331 stroker and I didn't want to trash the rebuilt tranny so I bought a High Performance unit . I also have a couple of manifolds and carbs that were set up for 5.0s and 302s on the shelf that we removed when the last three cars were converted to Fuel Injection systems. The manifold/carb setups are ' dialed in ' and performed very well . Some of the manifolds are ceramic coated ..Have a bunch of K&N breathers for carbs also if you're interested . Lemmeno .
