¡Greetings Maverick Owners! The situation I have follows. I recently took my 2006 Ford Mustang into a new shop to get the required yearly inspection for Virginia. One of the workers had an old Ford Maverick in a little side yard amongst other antique vehicles. I have always been a fan of classic vehicles in general, and a Maverick fits the category. The problem with this specific Maverick is his son drove the motor out and blew the sixth cylinder. The car currently has not ran for at least 11-13 years. Will definitely require a new motor. Of course also all of the other things a car needs from sitting so long. What would one be looking to spend to get everything running and driving correctly? Price-wise that is. Of course I am also curious as to the cost of power, with both stock I6 and V8 conversion. Common problems to look for and issues with Mavericks specifically also of interest.
Well all depends how far you like to go here is a. Picture of my maverick it has $ 5ooo.oo Dls into it and this is how stands right now not counting labor , its a hobby I think ? In your picture shows that the car is 4 doors if you like mavericks pick a 2 door maverick have fun , but it takes a lot but hard to see Those cars now ,,,
Your ride does look nice. Only reason I am asking about this one is I happened upon it and the owner is only asking a few hundred dollars. A coupe would obviously be preferred, but I do not know of one that cheap.
... pass on the 4 dr. there is a reason it's that cheap... if you put only a $3,000 in it then you will have a car worth only a few $100. if you can buy it right it would make a good parts car for a 2 dr...JMO
As the old saying goes: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it". I am going to assume by your question, that you can't do much of the work yourself and must pay somebody to do it all. For what it would cost to get that car going, you could buy a really nice 4-door Maverick for half that money.
I am able to do practically everything that a person could alone. I have experienced help from myself, grandfather, and ideally people on this site. The basic question simply , is there anyone on this site who has done a full restoration? Price wise what would one be looking at?
What these guys are trying to get across is that "an old 4 door Maverick costing a few hundred dollars" would not be an ideal starting point to use as a nearly endless money pit. Unless it carries some family history or personal nostalgia it's a losing proposition in just about every way possible. Passion for fixing up old cars is great as long as you have lots of disposable income, some semblance of sanity, and have no delusions that you'll be lucky to see even 10-20% of that total investment when you decide to sell it off later on. And if you don't finish it?.. as many often don't when life gets in the way of dreams.. you'll probably be lucky to recoup 5-10% of that investment. Total cost for supplies to rebuild existing drivetrain, suspension, body and interior, not including a hopped up engine(and it's prerequisite trans, suspension, and tire, will run somewhere's in the 5k range. With barely any following for the 4 door stuff, much effort will be spent on used parts as well. Then add another few grand for tools and tasks, including machine work, that will be required to get everything freshened up. Will take several hundred hours to do everything if you and your help are fairly well versed in restorations. Add another couple hundred hours if not as proficient in these types of things. And that's not even close to show car or concourse quality.
You all are very correct, in my situation my maverick still need at least from 6 to 7 thousand Dls to complete my goal without labor $ involve so figure at least 14 thousand what a great hobby but is a Maverick nostalgia and memories love it,
I am looking for nothing more than a Daily driver classic that is reliable. Based off of past experience, what would one be looking at to build the stock 4.0 back for reliability. Cam, gears, all the good stuff comes later. Just looking at getting a blown motor back running OR putting in a new motor, V6 or 8. Obviously I know the 8 will need a new drivetrain, but if anyone knows the figures for a built 6 and 8 let me know. Those numbers be HP/Torque, MPG, 0-60, alllll the good stuff. Weight to if you have the figure.
"Daily driver classic that is reliable." 5-7K if you do the work. I put $2500 in rebuilding my 250 six cyl. and it wasn't blown up, it was a running driving motor. the 6 cyl is as much if not more to build than a 302. these numbers are based off these statements... "has not ran for at least 11-13 years." "blew the sixth cylinder." it,s not just building the motor but...it will also need... water pump fuel pump fuel filter fuel lines oil oil pump oil filter motor mounts rad hoses hose clamps all belts spark plugs spark plug wires distributor distributor cap electronics for ignition radiator/ new or reworked radiator cap cam lifters timing gear set air filter oil filter T-stat oil sender temp sensor battery battery cables add up these parts plus machine work and that will get you close to cost to build the engine alone. next... wheel cylinders calipers brake fluid 4x tires wheel bearings wheel seals axle seals rear end fluid front suspension parts ? U-joints sitting that long...transmission rebuild transmission fluid I'm sure I've left out at least another 4-$5oo worth of stuff.
most new motors come without any of the replacement parts I listed on them. maybe the ... cam lifters timing change set oil pump also the list I gave didn't include these if car came with them... power assist steering rebuild power brake parts A/C compressor A/C condenser A/C lines what a lot of us do is buy a donor car and strip any good parts from it. another thing... does the car have any rust issues? most cars that have been sitting a while need a gas tank.
any new motor you get will need a...Maverick/Comet only oil pan. so don't throw any parts or pieces away until the car is done...none.
