I am getting my 74 maverick repainted. Want to keep everything as original as possible. The fibreglass stone guard that is between the grille and front bumper is now a silver (the rest of the car is blue). I looked at the original sales brocure and some are silver and others are painted the same as the rest of the body color. I think the silver is a better choice as it gives the appearance of the bumper not sticking out as far. Does anyone know if this silver is supposed to be a color match to the grille? I was planning on having the shop paint the stoneguard and grill the same color.

I too looked at one of my sales brochures. It seems that black grilled cars have a black stone guard. And cars with the argent (grey) grilles are body color. This does fit with cars I have owned. But as always with Ford's - that may not be a golden rule. :D

Update: After reading the posts about later cars, I'm inclined to believe what I posted here only applies to the earlier small bumper cars.

I agree, but would add that my 77 had black grille and headlight bezels, but had a silver stone guard. Personally, I do not like the look of body-coloured stone guards. And BTW, my 77 was red with white bottom. Something tells me that big bumper Comets were painted body colour, along with 73+ Grabbers??

I have to admit I don't know much about the 74 and up cars for the color. All the ones I have owned were early cars except for a 1975 I once had as a parts car. Thinking back on it, it was a brown car, argent grille with a silver stone guard.

Another original 74 with grey grille and silver (?) stoneguard.

... currently with tucked Comet bumper, grille and hood. The OEM stoneguard, the bumpers' 80+ pound 'safety' impact backing bar and heavy struts removed and replaced with lightweight angle steel struts. (and a supercharger for the 250)

    have fun

My Polar White 74's stone guard was Silver. I don't recall any of my others having body color, other than my Red and Black Stallion which was black. I always assumed it was usually silver to blend with the big bumper.

Similar to MightyMav74, I had a Polar white 75 and the guard on that car was argent.

Judging from all the posts .......... sounds like only the earlier small bumper cars had body color with the argent grilles .......... :yup:

Using the bland color on a big bumper to help blend into the looks sounds right to me.

You should paint it whatever color looks best. Original is boring. These cars are not collectors items.

I'm still curious about body color. My Dearborn '72 had the black engine compartment and a body colored stone guard (tan) with the argent grille. My '72 sales brochure shows cars with body color. Could it be another one of the "some did, some didn't" maybe by assembly plant?

That is what I am seeing in my brocures, Argent stone guard, and as others have said I think it helps the huge front bumper blend in better with the grill.

My rear stone gaurd (above the rear bumper) is blue, the car had one repaint before but I think that the rear is done in body color from the factory.
