I have thought of it but think it would be too $$. Most anything can be done with enough time and $$. A Jag or vette would be eaiser to make fit I think.

Being I work for a Ford Dealership, and have driven the IRS Stangs, there is NO WAY I would use one. The are terrible at wheel-hopping, even on gear changes, might be ok for handling, but bad for drag racing.

but do you know if the independent rear suspension would be a good addition for a road racer/autocrosser

IRS should be about the best thing for autocross but what do you mean by "road racer" ?

IRS= Good handling (road racing), but bad straight line accelleration.

Why not look at a late 80s to early 90s T-bird? Not sure of exact years, but they had IRS for a while. It was based on the 8.8" rear as a bonus, so parts and gears would be easy pickins. The Birds should be widely available in junkyards too for a donor car.

No matter what IRS you use though, it will be a chore getting it in a Mav, IMO.

    Good luck
    Dave

Putting ANY IRS into a Mav. would be lots of work. I would not attempt it myself. The benefit of an IRS would only be seen if you built the whole car front to back for road race type performance. I do not see the Mav. as an ideal car for that but i do believe there is very much potential in making it handle good .Lots of sucessful road racers used a solid rear axel. But on the other hand if you want something diffrent that looks real cool and have the means to do it.... I fit into that last statement but have neither the money nor skill and would rather put my money elsewhere.

    Good point.
You would want at least boxed SFCs and a well engineered rack and pinion front end... as opposed to a quickie M2 kit.
