Has anyone else been able to keep their auto on the column with headers? I'm just curious. When I did my 302 swap back in 2003 I don't think anyone else had kept the auto on the column when they installed long tube headers. I'm probably going to install a hammershifter soon but I hate losing the stock appearance of my interior, lol. Again, just curious.

Not sure why you would want to keep the lever on the column when the hammer shifter will surely look well beyond stock appearing anyways.. but it's not the column itself that interferes with the headers.. it's the linkage in the engine bay. Most just delete the linkage and the lever and go on with life.

Yes it can be done using a shifter cable from a v8 Granada, there is an article that has a pic on the forum. Member jmgford did it

maybe I misunderstood.. wouldn't the hammer shifter come with a cable?

I used my stock maverick linkage and just cut the welds loose and moved the brackets around until it worked. I just always liked the factory appearance in the interior. But I'm going to put the hammer shifter in now since the goal is to go faster. I was mainly just asking if anyone else had headers and the column shift auto.

The Thorley headers work fine with column automatic, BUT you'll need a custom header pipe bent as the one supplied hits the transmission and interferes with steering linkage...

I have no clue what brand my headers are, lol. I bought them in 2002 second hand from me Robert when he decided to go big block. They fit pretty well though.

Yes it is possible. I was able to do it on my 73 by removing the shift linkage and cutting and Welding the linkage back together so it would shift. It doesn't line up exactly on the column but it works perfectly.
