Had the Comet aligned today and was told the control valve and ran cylinder were shot... Which explains why the steering is so bad.

They recommended having them rebuilt vs. buying a replacement due to the quality of replacements.

Another shop want $500 to rebuild both of them.

With that price I wonder if there isn't a steering upgrade kit that isn't much more.

What has everyone else done when these components go out?

    Appreciate the feedback.

A rebuild kit for the control valve costs around $45.00 .
There are replacement power rams available. I don't know the cost.
The only real "upgrade" is a rack & pinion system, or a Borgeson power steering box.

Honestly the ram is very easy to rebuild, using the kit that I got from rock auto it took maybe thirty minutes? The control valve isnt too bad either, you just need to make sure you put everything back in the proper order and that NO dirt gets into it.

Yep, I rebuilt both my cylinder and control valve for less than $30 from Rock Auto. Two evenings in the garage got them cleaned, painted and reassembled. There are lots of videos of Mustang units being rebuilt on YouTube. The paper instructions leave a lot to be desired. I bought the AC Delco kits.
