I can't figure it out. I have a brand new HEI distributor installed. I removed the removable resistance wire that went to the old coil and threw it away. I thought i could run it from there but no. So, I hooked up a wire that goes from the HEI coil to the I on the ignition solenoid on the fender apron. It ran for like 4 seconds and that was he most I've gotten. All it does now is start for a split second but won't run .Timing should be dead on slightly advanced
Went ahead and ran constant 12v to it and it will run, but will not run to the red/green 12 switched connection at the firewall for some odd reason.
There is no constant power on the red/green wire, full batt voltage is supplied to coil during cranking via the solenoid... Normally this terminal has voltage back fed by the resistor wire, but you said you'd removed that...
how do I test it? I did not want to burn up my starter but it seemed to stay running for that second i held it right the solenoid gives the cranking voltage, so then why wouldn't there be constant switched 12v on the red/green wire? thats the way it was before + a resistor wire to save points.
If you jumpered out the resistor wire, there should be full 12v anytime ign sw is on... If it's removed and not jumpered, there won't be any voltage... Sounds like some issue with your mod...
I threw out that resistor wire that went from firewall to coil. I ran a new wire from hei distributor coil to where that resistor wire was originally connected. at the time of testing, it was showing plenty of volts through the red/green wires yet when you plug it in it won't run.
AFAIK the ACTUAL resistance wire is in the dash harness, not the engine bay... At least that's where it is in my Comet and that's a 100% as I've seen it... Check to see if there is voltage on wire with ign on, if it low that's your problem...
Should be same color at plug engine harness connects with(main engine bay harness)... If I remember correctly there are only three wires, one ea for oil & temp lights, third is red/green for coil supply...
sorry I'm a little confused right now. I have aftermarket gauges in the car so it is not using the temp and oil wires.
That's the plug, the resistance wire that powers it is in the dash harness... You probably won't have 6v to supply your new dist... With new dist connected, measure voltage at that plug with with ign on... Also with red/green disconnected from solenoid while cranking...
Alright, with the wire connected at the solenoid, that connector drops your typical few volts. (9.6) It drops down to 0.5 with the wire disconnected at I on solenoid.
