I considering using a mustang style trunk pans to convert my trunk. My hope is to use a mustang gas tank and hopefully center it for better exhaust clearance. Has anyone done this? My spare tire area is deeply rusted and the metal is thin because the deck lid leaked so bad. I've done this on my stang, built a tank jig for alignment and it turned out really good. What year stang parts could work if any for my 73 Mav. Also, the rear bumper panel is real weak on the passenger side, is there a panel that fits close to original? I keep finding rust issues the more I look. Thanks all
Thanks for the link, not quite what I'm looking for. I like how nice that turned out. I want to do a bolt in tank like the mustangs and early Mavericks used. This would require cutting out the spare tire section in my 73's trunk. I could get the trunk out of a 70 Maverick but that might be tough to find. Was hoping for the readily available stang trunk tins so a new stang tank could bolt right in. I'm going to go with 65 -66 tank and order the rear trunk pans for a direct fit. I'd like to stay with the 16 gallon versus the 20.I may have to fab some metal as my trunk is good except for the spare tire relief. Might start a new project topic when I get started in a few months.
Paul, Thanks a lot, This was what I have in mind for my car. Thought of using mustang tin but this is very doable at my skill level. Hopefuly it turns out as nice. I'll try to get pix up as I go when I get started.

Interested to see your progress photos - much better off building the tank well yourself as a 70 Maverick trunk floor with tank well will graft in place but good 1970 tanks are getting harder to find
Understood, that is why I am going to lean toward fabricating the tins or altering new mustang panels. That stuff is readily available. It will be a while til I start but I will definitely document the process. Thanks for the link, was close to my idea.
This is what give me the idea, when I did my trunk in my Mustang. I also added a tail light cross member from a convertible to help stiffen the rear panel, maybe that could work in our cars too. Might need to massage it a little.
Hey, are you doing this just because of your rust issues? You might be able to get better sheet metal from a 4-door mav/com and graft it in. Less worries about exploding tanks etc. But, your plan will work too!
2 things, my fuel sender is bad, the tank is rusted inside clogging my fuel filters and the tire relief is pretty thin, no holes yet. I figured the mustang tins might be the easiest waty to go , mav parts are tough to get locally around here. Tank bomb is not a concern, would proably make a blast shield where the cardboard one lives now.
