I have a 75 maverick that I put a 302 in, it came with a 250. I have read other post and alot was said about the balancer and flywheel must be balanced the same. How can I tell if they are matching? I was told that the 302 came out of a early model van, 70-75 I am guessing. I am also wondering about the water pump, I have read that the lower water outlet must be on the drivers side, this one is on the pasangers side. If it's not correct it's a good thing I have not run the engine for more then a few minites at a time.

the 250 flywheel is 0 balanced. the 1970's 302 should be 28oz. later 302's were 50 oz though

i would think it would be hard to feel internal vibrations at idle in park though. usually they become more noticable at higher RPMs

could poor motor mounts or a rough idle be the cause?

Make sure you get the correct size also. They come in 157 tooth or 164 tooth.:)

Should I go new on the flex plate or will used be ok? If I go used can I tell by looking at it if it is a 28 oz. or 50oz.? To find out if I need a 157 or 164 tooth can I just count the one I'm taking off and replacing? You guys are full of information thank you?

most cars used 157 tooth flywheels, most trucks/vans that ive seen have 164 tooth flywheels. you'd have to take your's off and count the teeth to be sure though. and if you need one, a used one should do.....

a 164T wont even fit inside the C4's bellhousing, so you'll know if it is or isnt

There is a 164 tooth bellhousing for a C4, but I don't know if it was ever used behind a 250. I had one in my 77, and from what little information I was able to find, that may have been the first year for it, and I don't know how long they used it. He's right though, it won't fit in a 157 tooth bellhousing -- when I swapped tranny's years ago, that's when I figured out my motor had a 164 tooth flexplate on it, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not get the bellhousing over the flexplate. :D

My C4 is from a '77 Comet, and it had the big 164 tooth bellhousing and flexplate too. I had been wondering if that was stock. Apparently so...

Thanks everyone:) I am in Monterrey Mexico right now, so I will make the changes starting Friday night and will report back on the status.

Oh! by the way alot of our Mavericks have found there way to Mexico. The junk yards are full of them and I see about 10 a day on the roads. I wished I can find a way to get some of them home and regestered. The going price for a good Maverick, Nova and other collector cars is only around $200-$800 and they are not all rusted out.

The difference is similar to the 50oz imbalance on the later models, which I have encountered, and trust me, you'll feel it at idle.

I misread that the balance changed when they went to roller, so I thought an 84 flywheel would work.

I was wrong. Just about rattled my fillings out before I could cut the key off. It was actually far worse at idle than at higher rpm, as it was more severe in lower repetitions than higher. Higher RPM made for a smoother vibration (better for me, worse for the engine), lower RPM was actually shaking the entire car to the point that I was worried about structural damage.

I also changed out the water pump to the correct flow and it is also working great. I'm glade I asked the questions. I will be posting pictures soon showing how this car went from an abused Maverick to car you just love to show off. I will also be posting later today looking for parts so please help if you can.

I have a 72 comet that I took the 250 out and replaced it with a rebuilt 91 roller engine. Kept and rebuilt the c4. Put a flex plate with a 50 oz counter weight in and a Summit harmonic balancer with a 50 oz. Now I have a severe vibration in park when rpm is at 2,500 and above. Vib goes away on the road at about 55mph. Everyone is telling me that the crank is out???
