Hi guys finally got some freed up money. Looking at alternators and was wondering if the gm case will give me issues mounting to a 351w on summit people review that they had to mod to get this to work even though it says it will fit. The ford case one I was looking at is a 2G any word here? Oh yeah almost forgot I'm running a 100 amp single wire and yes I am rewiring the whole car and will have adequate gauge wiring. Also does anyone know how much room I will have between the water pump and the radiator mount area for a radiator electric fan set up? The set up I was looking at is 7" in total depth from front of radiator to back of fan and shroud.
There is approx 4.5 - 5" between radiator shroud mounting flange and bolts on water pump... I'm yet to see anyone use the serpentine setup from '94-'95 Stang or '91-'93 T-Bird/Cougar that would give another inch or so clearance... It would require everything from front of block forward, as timing cover is unique to those vehicles(and 5.0 Explorer)... The Exploders use a weird accessory arrangement isn't like the Stang, Bird.. I believe all the 2G are same size as the original 1G unit, those have the plug in battery connector that is famed for burning up... Not familiar with the GM alt...
Connector on end of harness that plugs into alt overheats due to poor connection, has started fires... With a new plug they are generally OK(at least for awhile)... Search 2G alternator fire, should be plenty of hits on net...
Will search that thanks. Hey Krazy comet do you know of a good radiator and electric shrouded fan setup for my car that is around the $400 range?
If ur running 100 amp, why do u need to change alternators? Unless ur running multiple hi pwr stero amps, along w/ lots of other current hungry accessories 100 should work just fine.
I dunno how good it is but I have this one on my Comet... Only have around 500 miles so far, no issues... http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-ALL-ALUMINUM-RADIATOR-FAN-SHROUD-W-16-FAN-FORD-MODELS-20-WIDE-CORE-/291499840086?fits=Model:Maverick&hash=item43debe9256&vxp=mtr Clearance is close and this unit is only around 4½" deep...
I ran the GM 1-wire 12SI alternator for a few years. IIRC I had to drill the upper mounting bolt hole larger and do a little grinding on the lower bracket. Also used the pulley from my old Ford alternator.
Sorry about the confusion MOJO, I meant I will be running a 100 amp alternator right now I have a stock one from my old 302. Thanks for the pic k.c. it helps me to see things for myself. Does a comet have the same length engine bay as a maverick?
Thanks also bmc I'm trying to get at least one thing done to this car that doesn't need additional modification. Hahaha that is funny when talking about a 351w powered maverick these cars are all about aditional mods.
