Any info or forum links to info on gearing of the 3 spd Toploader - 3.03 tranny appreciated ... I have a few from :a 170, 200 and a 250 . Read maybe sixes different from V8 3 Spd's ?? . . thansk
I dunno if I've ever seen a ratio chart, but it's not hard to figure out... Put trans in 1st gear and count how many turns of input are required to rotate output one time... Won't be exact but easy enough to tell 2.5 turns from 2.75, from 3, etc... Do same for 2nd gear...
3.03 doesn't have overdrive...only 3 forward gears. They made 3 or 4 different cluster gears w/different gear count and lengths so I assume they were different gear ratios. Master Parts Catalog show that sometimes the cluster gear fits 6 or V8 and sometimes it fits V8 only.
Specs found on net but I can't guarantee accuracy... The 2.42 version was supposedly used behind big blocks, suspect that was trans behind 390 in my '64 Galaxie 500.. Was also used in some GM applications(mostly Pontiac), refereed to as the Dearborn transmission... 3.03 Toploader ratios 2.99 1.75 1.00 3.17 2.79 1.70 1.00 ? 2.42 1.61 1.00 2.33
From the web 3.03 Small Block & I6 Transmission Ratios 1st 2nd 3rd 2.99 1.75 1.00 3.03 FE Transmission Ratios 1st 2nd 3rd 2.42 1.61 1.00
THanks for the discussion, I think the FE and L6/SBF differences are what I've heard about. I was curious if the L6 and SBF V8's applications were different but no one seems to think so ... have fun. ... but not too much:
