Melvins has two sending units for 70-77 mavericks and comets in his catalog. Have you checked with them?

Wow! I've not heard of them! Thank you very much! I've heard that maybe the float
is bad, now I can replace it! But I probably should just replace the unit. Looks like
a quality unit will be about $100, I'm thinking anything cheaper will probably be poor
    quality.

Have you checked your float? If it has a pinhole in it it will fill with gas and read empty you can get a replacement on E bay real cheap I paid Twelve bucks for one that was all that was wrong with mine.

    Hi rthomas771,
Was the original float not made of metal? I certainly would like to save money and
ONLY have to buy a float, but then after I put it all together and try it, it may still
not be a float issue so getting a new unit would've been the better idea.

Another question: When I drain the tank, I was thinking of syphoning into another
vehicle, but at the funnel, put in a couple coffee filters to make sure clean gas goes
    in--will this work?

    Renton5-
I might be wrong but I think all Mavericks came with a metal float. If it was me ...I'd get the unit and the whole 9 yards (0-ring and new lock ring) because I know my luck. The 3 or 4 times I replaced a sending unit I had to remove the tank from the car and stand it on it's edge with the sending unit facing up to seat the sending unit or it would leak. Then again maybe that's just my luck. Use a brass drift punch to remove/tighten the lock ring...you don't want to use a screwdriver or hard metal to create a spark or the last thing you hear might be a big boom.

I always drain all the gas I can in a 5 gallon gas can by removing the fuel line then pour the gasoline into another car or lawn mower. I also used a clean cloth rag because I don't drink coffee and don't have coffee filters. I would think the coffee filters would do the job too. Once I drain gas the best I can then I loosen the sending unit and carefully catch the last of the gasoline that is still in the tank.
