As I type this, there are two Mavericks on the carport, one on the driveway, one on the trailer, one by the basement door, and two in the back yard. Oh, yeah, and there's one at my dad's house. What's that? Eight? I need help.
Nice score! I'd make it street legal. You just might get the itch to go cruisin'.... My wife supports my addiction to Mavericks & Comets also. I only have 5 though (1 parts car). The other 4 are driveable. I like the idea of trying to decide which one I'm going to drive today.
I've got a '73 that I'm going turn into one hot street cruiser. This new purchase may be "street legal" in name only. I'd like to run it a 10.5 class.
You can always make it street legal. Atleast in arkansas.. we have no inspection, but if you got a title for it, just keep it on hand can always register it and such Just leave the taillights/turnsignals and headlights operational, about all you need When I get my Comet ready to go, i'll be driving it on the street some if i can find a frekaing title for it
Good deal, Terry. I'm glad someone from the board bought it. ... and since you asked.... STRIP ONLY! (ok, my vote anyway) You already have other mavericks that would be a better candidate to make a nice quick street car. If I had to offer any suggestions at all, it would be to make your mind up that it is a drag-race only car or it is a street car only. It'll save you money and heartache in the long run. I say go balls/wall drag race car and don't look back. Oh yeah, I'd also suggeset you start with a 351 block as your base. As you know, "There's no replacement for displacement". Congrats and good luck either way you go.
Terry you made out like a bandit bud to say the least, wish I could say the same after my trip to Daytona yesterday
That is my original intent. I would love to MII the front end and go 460, but I want to race in some classes, not just bracket race. Both Fun Ford Racing series and the Nat'l Mustang Racing Assn. have a class where you can race a Maverick. The car can be back-halved, but the front suspension has to be stock. You can make adjustments like cutting shock towers, but you can't chnage the suspension. That lends itself to a 408W. I'm also considering running in 10.5 class. Several sanctioning bodies have that and the rules are similar to each body. I just need to do my research in that area as well. Regardless, It's going to be bad boy and I hope to get it in the very, very low 9's on the 1/4. Depending on budget, I may even push it down in the 8's. I've got it bad. Can someone please help me?
I wish I could help Terry but Im apparently afflicted with the same disease ...is there anything like Alchoholics Anonymous for this?
Great Deal ??? Thats sweeter than peach cobbler!!! I sure am looking forward to meeting up with the GA gang some day.Was that car from GA ??
That looks like a solid car, doubly so for the price. It is a little hard to tell from the pics, but I would warn you about running that car faster than 10's. It looks like the cage was stick welded, not TIG welded. The NHRA will require chassis certification which would include looking at the weld quality, plus at certain speed levels you need more cross bracing and gusseting. On my Regal back in the early nineties, we had to cut out the cross bar behind the driver and move it up...we had it too low. Memphis Motorsports wouldn't let us run there till we did because we were running 10.20's. My advice would be whether you want it streetable, to get an NHRA rulebook, plus the rulebooks of the Ford classes you want to run. The NHRA rulebook will guide you as far as safety...cage, belts, window net, etc. At some of these tracks, especially the ones that host NHRA nationals, they aren't going to let cars race that don't meet NHRA safety rules. I've seen several bad ass cars that guys couldn't sell or race anywhere but the little sh*thole tracks, because they weren't built to NHRA specs. I don't mean to come off as preachy, but it's a case of been there done that...had to redo a bunch of stuff to go racing. Next car I build will be done with the NHRA rulebook as the first tool that comes outta the toolbox. Beyond that, a 408W sounds good, but a 427W is even better! You can even get 427 badges for the fenders! Drew
