My 74 has 94,0000 miles on it and needs a good cleaning and painting to detail the engine compartment. I just got dibs on a newly remanufactured 1978 Ford 250 Long Block for $675 delivered to my door with no core charge. From other prices I've seen that appears to be a great deal. Just want to make sure Ford didn't change anything on the 1978 engines that would make something not bolt up or in for the 74 Mav
There was no change from 74 to 78. The only differance would be for polluation control stuff but just use what you have and it will work. Out side of that no problem. Good luck
If $675 is for a complete rebuilt engine, by all means jump on it!I got a price on a Jasper for my '76 of $1700! A local shop that does a lot of rebuilds wants nearly $1500 and that's if I pull the engine and deliver it to them.
The '78 will work just fine and make more power than the '74 thanks to the bigger valves and intake log. You will need to use the dizzy out of the '74 though because the '78 don`t use pionts.
Got it from an engine rebuilder in Florida ... guess he couldn't get rid of it ... said the retail for the long block was $1235 .... I got him down to $500 plus shipping. Shipping was $145 ... it was already on a pallet and it shipped out today ... I should have it Monday or Tuesday ... Here is the info he sent me .. Long block, professionally processed by a Production Engine Remanufacturer (PER). This is a "zero mile" engine; it has no miles of use on it. This 250 cid L6 engine, with block casting number starting with D8DE, was used in Ford cars in the '70's ('76-'79; may fit other years). (This engine would normally wholesale (with core value) for $1285.00.) Re-manufacturing includes, but is not limited to, the following: bored and honed for oversize pistons; crankshaft re-machined; rods re-machined; heads re-machined. New parts include pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, and oil pump. Quality parts are manufactured by Clevite, Federal Mogul, Hastings, Melling, Silvolite, and others. Hopefully it has the matching 1978 heads ...
dan, great deal...i had $2300 in a 6 i built once... it went north... when you get it, throw it in earls, truck and bring it down to my house. we can throw it in the mav. maybe Kelly, will swing by after work and can help. start soaking the ex. manifold bolts now. check and see if the carb. is the same....get a pertronix for the dist.... ...frank... p.s. ...just don't bring terry....
Here's my plan once the weather is warmer ... I'll probably take a few days of from work to get it done: 1) Get new engine painted and ready to go 2) Pull old engine and tranny 3) Detail/paint and move parts/pulleys/etc to new engine 4) Rebuild the C4 using a rebuild kit and Haynes book 5) Clean and paint the engine compartment 6) Install it all back in the car ... It doesn't make sense to put a rebuilt engine in front of a tired C4 so I'm gonna rebuild it myself Sounds like lots of other guys on the board have as well ...
Engine is here ... The box included engine, gaskets and a new oil pump. Now I just need to get a strong buddy over here to put in on the engine stand since I don't have a engine hoist yet ...
You do know that a 250 weighs almost as much as a 302 ? A chain hoist only costs ~ 10 bux, you might wanna think about getting one .
I was gonna give the guy driving the delivery truck $20 to help since he had a lift gate. I figure we could lay it down. bolt the engine stand to it and then lower the lift gate ... wallah ... engine on engine stand. This guy didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Then I explained to him we would have to take it out of the shipping box amd he was like no way. I can't take it out of the box ... if my boss found out I'd be in a lot of trouble. Said he had to drop it off as is and leave. Oh well ... I saved $20 bucks today but my engine is still in the box!
