    Sorry, not for the AC.

AC has a separate wire that comes off of the AC thermostat and runs along with the vacuum hose lines for the water valve and vacuum source.

Let me see if I can look at my harness. I have a couple of wires that are tucked up in the same area that never did anything.

    Tom,
That's interesting, I wonder if there is something different with the Comet. The '71-'72 Maverick's with factory air that I have dealt with had the AC clutch wire coming from the AC thermostat as I described.

I have only ever witnessed this as well on all years of Maverick.

Looks like "dashes" on the wiring. Isn't that for emissions?

Well guys I apologize, Micah you're correct... :banghead:

There are two wires, one brown the other red that's hot with ign on, I believe it originally connected to the high idle solenoid on carb... The brown is open, no power in any mode I tried(ign, start, lights, heater) & has no continuity to ground even using the 20 megohm scale...

99% there wasn't anything connected to brown when I got the car, it did have the fast idle solenoid...

    Tom,
No need to apoligze. We are all trying to figure these things out.

    SCS (What is your name?),
I just went out and looked at the NOS harness on my '71.

I think we are getting the wire colors wrong. I think the red/orange is actually red/yellow.

My '71 has a single plug with a red/yellow, but, I suspect your brown/yellow is a tan/white. My car was originally from Canada and they may have omitted the tan/white.

With that, look at the lower left of the wiring diagram for the '72 and you will see a single red/yellow wire listed for emissions, right next to the stop light switch. http://www.maverickcomet.com/Wiring/MavWiring/1972/1972MavMain.pdf

Now, are you sure your car is a '72? I say this because, if you look at the wiring diagram for the '71, you will see the emission control system drawn out and in there is a tan/white wire for the speed sensor. (Maybe they just omitted this on the '72 diagram.) I believe the speed sensor would have been on the instrument end of the speedometer cable and the tan/white wire would have originated there. It looks like it mates up with the red/yellow wire at a plug.

The schematic from the '71 Ford Service Manual is a little better and spells out what the C72 and C73 plugs look like. This is a better reference. Here is a snapshot of the section:
    Harness.jpg
Note that on C73 it showes R-Y(H). I could not find a reference, but I wonder if "H" means a dashed color.

So, that is my suggestion as to what your wires are for.

I don't think the '72 has a throttle modulator, at least I haven't seen one in mine... There is one with the '71 under dash harness I picked up awhile back...

For what it's worth my '72 is a late build, production code date on warranty card is June 23 1972, usually a model year's production is completed by mid/latter July... Not much doubt the speedo cable isn't orig, has no speed sensor, it did have EGR that I always though was on '73 models...

Thanks for all the help everyone. To answer some questions:
    1) My name is Steve
    2) I agree the "dashed" wire is Red/Yellow, not Red/Orange
    3) The "dashed" wire I am calling Brown/Orange may be Tan/Orange (But, it is not as Tan as the Sport Lamp Tan/solid Orange, but then it is not as brown as the all Brown wires).
    2) I believe this is a 1972, see below:
    sticker.jpg
I just found this massive cut in my cab wiring harness which has both the Red/Yellow and Brown (Tan)/Orange wires (9 wires cut total). See below by yellow post-it.
    Cut.jpg
I am going to spend much of today tracing out these cut wires to attempt to understand this cut and everything you all have posted above. I'll give a summary if there is anything left of my brain. I am slowly approaching asking why I didn't buy a painless kit, but then when I am all done, I will understand this so much better, assuming it works.

    Steve,
I hate harness molesters. Too bad one got ahold of yours.

I know of a shop that made an entire tail light harness for me. He can supply connectors and propperly coded wire.

Let me see if I can post the factory diagram.

Here is a picture of my '71 Grabber harness after I cleaned it up. I hope it helps you figure out what is missing. It is in the car now, but I have a standard harness in the attic. If you need some close up pictures, I can dig it out for you.

Those cut wires are all in the area of the dash where the seat belt warning light/buzzer would be. But, being built in October of 1971 I bet your car doesn't have the seat belt light in the dash. My orange October 1971 built Grabber did not have one either.

    Craig,
Isn't the buzzer the long red and the black dashed wire ending with the large plug in the lower left of my photo?

His cut looks like it is between the instruments and the ash tray and possibly got the buzzer feed and a few others. Possibly cut the radio feed, Sport Lamps and the interior light feed for the radio or ash tray

Kind of hard to really tell....but looks to be in the general area of the radio feed as well.

I spent most of the day tracing wires. Then finished it off ice fishing etc, so I need another day to soak all this in (too many bottle bass). However, here is what I think I have so far:

    1) The Red/dashed Yellow wires appear to be all emissions. They are everywhere in the cab harness but all appear to be dead ends. 3 of the cut wires are Red/dashed Yellow and all inter-connected. No need for these.
    2) The Brown/dashed Orange appears to be a dead end, consistent with above information. No function.
    3) 2 of the cut wires are the key buzzer. I really don't care if I have this, so I'll just leave it cut for now.
    4) The new item for me is that the I have 2 new wires that I don't understand. My Neutral Safety/Backup Light connector has 6 connections vs the 4 shown in every drawing (1970-1975). I suspect this is a column shift vs floor shift issue. The two additional wires I have on the neutral safety/backup light connector are a) Light Green x2 and b) Pink or Purple/White. The 2 Lt Green wires appear to be dead ends and are cut, but the Pink or Purple/White shows up a lot (also cut in my picture above). In any case, I suspected the neutral safety and backup lights would need addressed. I don't understand what I have, but I think I can make it all work. There are uninvestigated wires in my floor shifter and transmission that may allow me a solution for neutral safety start and backup lights.

Bottom line is I think I am 99% sure my new harness will work with some minor modifications for neutral safety and backup lights. It's the 1% that I am worried about.

Again, thanks for all this information.

    Steve,
I tried to find your earlier post about your floor shift linkage to confirm this, but I couldn't. So, in case you were not awar, the neutral safety switch is on the transmission.

If you would like the PDF of the electrical section from the Service Manual, PM me with your email address.
