I am trying to make my own wiring harness for the engine bay, eliminating many of the unneeded wires with todays options such as one wire alternators and starters with integral solenoids etc. I found the following link for detailed wiring of the firewall connector:

    http://www.maverickcomet.com/Wiring/Maverick.asp

However, my 1972 grabber does not match the wiring shown for the firewall connector for 1972. Does anyone know of any other resources for this connector?

For example, for the most part, the "upper 1/2" of the connector matches perfect, but the "lower 1/2" does not. I have 8 wires that do not match for a 1972 Maverick (of which 5 I think I have figured out), but I have 3 in the firewall connector that I have no idea. Specifically, 1) RED, 2) BROWN w/ ORANGE "swirl" and 3) a TANish with ORANGE.

I think I can get by without connecting any of them because I have found everything I need, but I know when I go to start it, it won't and I'll have a headache figuring it out

    Thanks for any help!

The brown/orange is feed to heater switch from the fuse panel, doesn't pass through the bulkhead connector...

Dunno about others, may be a good idea to check 1973 diagrams my late '72 has some '73 parts...

    SCS,
Was your car a Grabber? Is the Tan/Orange wire in the very corner of the plug. If yes to both, that wire is for the Sport Lamps.

Are you incorporating a relay for the High/Low beams?

Thanks, I checked every Maverick from 1970 to 1975+, but none match. I saw one thread stating LDO options had some extra wires etc and the link I provided just shows the standard wiring, but what I am seeing is much different than just sport lamps or anything else I can think of. I'll check out the lead on the BROWN with ORANGE "swirl" wire, but it definitely goes through the bulkhead connector. Maybe its a dead end, I'll check that out too.

Thanks! Yes it is a grabber and that is the Tan/Orange wire I have, so it must be the sport lamp. I will use relays, so I can pick that up with another wire (I'll just have sport lamps on with markers or headlamps). So now I only have 2 unknown wires. A RED one and a BROWN with ORANGE "swirl" I see a RED one with an ORANGE "swirl" in your picture near the center of the connector, so maybe my RED was dirty. Any idea what that one is? I will try to get a picture of what I have tomorrow and compare it with these pictures.

My heater fan motor hot wire runs directly into the cab and is not in the engine bay, so that may explain one.

The wiring diagram is pretty good. The two boxes in the first page depict the plug. You should be able to compare each wire you have to the diagram.

My bulkhead connector definitely doesn't match any drawings on this link. The lower 1/2 is different, see 2nd picture below. I guess my question comes down to 2 unidentified wires as shown. Both have an orange dot marker vs an orange line marker and are heavier gauge. Any ideas for these 2?

I am thinking the Red with Orange "dots" is for emission controls even though the wiring diagram does not show it going through the bulkhead connector. Also, the Brown with Orange "dots" is possibly the heater fan power (which is in the engine bay for some cars, but not mine).

Can you look at the plug ends and see if any of them match the unknown wires? If you can't easily tell, cut off the wrap and trace them down. Your not going to use the harness anyway.

If you want to clean that thing up, throw it in a bucket of hot water and laundry soap. It will come out like new. A good thing to do to the interior harness too.

Thanks for the info. But I scrapped the old engine bay harness, so tracing it out will not be possible. I know wiring is a headache no-matter what, so I appreciate your feedback. I think I am close enough, so I can close this thread unless someone has my bulkhead connector configuration. After completion mid spring, I will update this if the car starts & runs right with my modified wiring configuration (50/50)?!?!?

Too bad you got rid of that. Someone who is doing a clone may have wanted it. Also, the Sport lamps have a wierd plug that you may have wanted.

Geeze, I feel like a sinner for tossing Maverick parts! Anyway, I got it back. I plan to splice all connections, so I may have a "clone" or many connectors available soon. When I am all done with wiring, I will post this harness and connectors in case someone needs them. Thanks for the heads up, I realize Maverick parts are hard to come by. I saw rock guard grommets go for $25.

I got my old harness back. I laid it out and the Brown/Orange and Red/Orange wires both feed the two prong connector I have marked in the attached picture. I'm not sure if this is exactly where the harness would lay, but it seems to want to go along the firewall. Can anyone tell me what this plug feeds normally?

Perfect! Thanks again Tom. I now have every wire figured out. Something I wanted to do since once I hook it all up, it either works or I go nuts.
