I recently pulled the windshield on my 75 comet and was wondering how to approach the dash.. I want to get it out of the way so I can inspect, clean, and paint the cowel. Is there any special technique I need to know or just go for it?
It is a bit of work but not that difficult. It is one of those things that once you start, you will probably end up doing a lot of other things while you are there. I would suggest pulling the column or at a minimum the steering wheel. The column probably needs a rebuild anyway. Also, leave the harness in place and just unplug from the firewall. The instrument panel needs to come out or at least disconnect the speedometer cable. If you have AC, your ducts will need to come out. If you do pull it, put a few pices of Dynamat on the inside of the dash to keep rattles from resonating. Micah
In keeping with this, buy some tie wraps and a tube of silicone to secure and dampen everything behind and inside the dash. Its better than beating on top of the dash pad when those creaks and rattles are driving you crazy on the road.
The rattle-proofing is a good idea. I wonder if there would be any value in placing dynamat or something on the back side of the dash?
Paul, That was actually what I was suggesting. I did as much of the backside of the dash as I could. It was an afterthought and I did it in place. I had the scraps of Dynamat laying around and figured that it certainly could not hurt. Micah
Once I recover out of the Nissan fiasco, I want to pull the dash pad on my Comet GT. I figure it has to be bolted in there somehow....
