While cleaning out my storage building I ran across a kick panel that didn't look like the other panels. Upon closer inspection I notice it has a '73 part number. My question is...Did all 73's with lower package trays have this larger cut-out at the top? Is this for the LDO package tray? In the pic below the 73 kick panel is in front and a 70-72 style is in the back. Has any one seen this style on any other year?

I have the same D3DB marked panels. Why they made this change? No idea except maybe they were anticipating needing the larger cutout to accommodate the full glove box lower dash. And once that dash was being used they eliminated the "flag" completely to save money, since the full lower dash covers that part of car from view..

Interesting... Jeff and Eric, was this large relief cut shown in Jeffs photo like that for both sides?

dyent did your Comet come with factory AC? The reason I ask, I wonder if they were different because of some duct work difference between an AC equipped vehicle versus one with just the fresh air duct work?

Here is the panel I took off my car that I replaced with panels that came with factory speaker grilles. Its a 74 non-AC full w/glove box ...the panel has D4DB part number. VIN says the car was built Nov. 73

BKelley- Don't know about both sides. I only have one '73 kick panel

I have both sides and they are different. Both are D3DB and came from the same car.

I have never noticed that. If I ever get out to that part of my garage again, I will look at my stash and see what I have.

That is exactly the same as what Eric has posted on both my 74 Comet LDO and 74 Maverick LDO w/glove boxes. Both are non AC cars, seemed to remember the LH cut out was to clear lower
dash metal bracket or something. Got me curious now, so I might have to take a look. The Comet
is gone, but I kept the panels, the Mav is still complete, so will check it out.

I wonder if the larger notch was there to clear this section of duct? (see attached photo)

I just finished crawling under the dash and took a look on my 74 Mav LDO same as what Jeff has pictured on both sides. Yet on my 74 Comet LDO exact same as what Eric has pictured, with notched "flag" on LH and non-notched on RH. Both my LDO's are non AC and has dash vents on both sides along with glove box, so go figure?? One would think both LDO's would be the same, who knows what Ford was thinking, obviously they had a reason for different kick panels? Maybe it was whoever was installing them a the plant and just used whatever they had on hand?
