As many of you know, I changed out the tranny filter yesterday.
Half way through putting the pan back on, I noticed that some of the bolts had a really small rubber washer on them. Since not all the bolts had them, so I didnt think anything of it, but today I noticed that the pan is now leaking. Small rubber washers needed or is it something else?

    Thanks!

normal bolts usually work fine. was it a cork or rubber gasket and did you overtighten it?

my tranny pan dosen't have any rubber washers or anyother washers for that matter. you just have to snug them up. i think only 12-15 pounds. :)

I used a rubber gasket. I may have tightened them too much. Does 'too' tight cause it to leak? can it be fixed by just loosening them up or do i need to get another gasket and start over?

yeah ovetightening can cause leaks. I assume since you ask....you have a leak?

I would start all over with another gasket. Leaks can be a real PITA's.
My Hughes pan came with washers on it

if you can find a gasket that looks like thin waxed cardboard (tan or brown color), they are great. impossible to overtighten and seal well.

    Or...

if you're REAL careful, you can use one of those cork/carboard type gaskets and a little silicone....just be sure to snug it (and don't overdo the silicone, as chunks of it can be sucked up into the filter, )

Rick - do you have a stamped sheet metal pan or a cast aluminum one? If you have the sheet metal one - hammer the flange around the holes flat - its probably distorted.
