The Comet didn't want to start so I put a 2 amp charger on overnight. The battery didn't hold much of charge. The engine cranked very slow. When I gave up and took the key out of the ignition switch the engine suddenly started cranking on its own. Thought the garage had a ghost! When I rushed to disconnect the battery I noticed smoke coming from the negative cable right at the battery post. After pulling the battery I put in on the bench and gave it another 2 amp charge. Looks like the battery charged up just fine out of the car. Of course there is no load on it so I'm not really sure if its good. What is the best way to troubleshoot this problem?

Sounds like the starter solenoid got hot and the points stuck.

yep. low voltage will increase the amperage draw. the starter already has a high amperage draw at 12 volts. the lower voltage will require higher amperage and can weld the contacts in the solenoid together. replace your solenoid and also check for any drains on the battery to make sure it doesnt happen again.

You might also have oxidation buildup between the terminal and battery post. That may be why it didn't charge in the car. The scraper type terminal cleaners are the best for removing the oxidation.
