yea that's the link we were just talking about. it's a thick wire that goes into the link and then a yellow and black with orange stripe wire comes out. I'll go ahead and make that connection but if the link is bad, how am I going to replace that?
Links can be bought at Advance, AZ, NAPA, etc... Replacements are crimped to wiring (cut out orig link even if good)... I believe orig links are 16 gauge, maybe someone knows for sure...
I have replaced them in the past, but my question to you is how am i going to replace this particular wire?? Like i said it's 1 wire and splits off into 2.
I went out and looked and the wire pulled out of the connector I couldn't even tell because of the other wires on the solenoid. Anyway, I used my powerprobe on the 2 wires from that wire and it shows I get continuity on the black wire but not the yellow wire, so I guess this fusible link is toast. I just need a replacement. Could it have blown because of the other wire??
Without actually looking at it no idea how/why problem began... Could have a bare wire someplace or maybe terminal was accidentally shorted to ground, battery reversed etc... For crimping the fuse link with two wires get a barrel connector large enough to fit all the wires into... On opposite end with one wire, strip around one inch and fold over in middle so it's a double thickness, insert with link and crimp... I generally solder mine after crimping but in this case the fuse link won't accept solder...
I'm confused right after you said to fold it so it's double thickness. and do you mean a butt connector? I found this picture and was wondering if this could work by using fusible link wire since apparently just part of that fusible link is bad?
Yeah if soldered that repair will work just fine .. I meant a butt connector, got up too early up too late, goin' for a shower and bed...
ok thanks. I was just wondering how this car was able to drive home if I have a problem with both these wires??
Theoretically it should be totally dead with both fuse links open, but obviously there's another path to power at least the ign system... Not knowing your car's mods or past repairs I have no idea(this is what Scooper was referring to)...
yea i don't know. but thanks for the help guys. I'll make the repair but I still have to replace the starter now
