All ive had has been a string of bad luck with fuel pumps from autozone. Ive gone through 4 in the last year so far, Airtex seems to have somethin messed up with their pumps. Recently replaced mine again and now its not even pumping fuel to the carb. Do you guys have recommendation for one?

Do you have rust or trash in the tank. Contamination can keep the check valve in the pump open.

Im sure there is rust in the tank, its never been cleaned out and its the original. I would think that to be a possibility but the pump just stopped working from one day to the next. never had an issue till i replaced the original one. Im going to add more gas see if maybe thats an issue. I have a quarter though, but maybe its not able to suck up enough and push it through?

I would quit buying parts from Auto Zone for starters. There is a reason they are always the cheapest in town. :D

Where did you mount the pump ? It needs to be as close to and as far below the tank as possible. I just replaced a defective MrGasket 12s pump on my Comet that lasted all of 6 months (of occasional driving at that) with a Professional Products 30 gal/hr low pressure pump. This pump looks (and sounds) exactly like the old Purolator electric I ran in my 89 V8 Ranger for ten years. I know this company doesn't have the best record with it's other products, but I'm pretty confident this is one that should hold up like the Purolator pump did for me. I have it mounted to the inside frame rail just forward of the spring hanger. Also have an inline filter between the tank and pump. I bought it through Summit Racing for about $50 shipped.

I've been running an Airtex pump (Advance Auto Parts) in my gas tank sense 02/08/2011....no problems so far.

Well maybe its the pump by the tank that i need to replace? Ive been talking about the mechanical pump thats mounted on the engine block on the right side of it.

unless youre talking about mounting the electric pump close as possible to the gas tank itself?

you would definitely need to clean the tank out if you go E-pump...install filters before and afterwards...:yup:

You only need one fuel pump. An electric low pressure with a flow of around 30-40 gals/hr is all the pump you need to feed a carbed motor. This is what I feed the three carbs on top of my 331 with. The only time it doesn't keep up (aside from the pump going out) is when the fuel filter gets clogged up. That just serves to remind me the filter needs changing

Thanks for the tips, i guess i will be going that route if this new brand of mechanical pump i ordered doesnt work. I was trying to go the most affordable route because i just need to move the car a short distance before gutting her and restoring from the ground up as well as dropping in an EFI 302.

Make sure the pickup filter/screen is still on the sending unit. That will keep stuff out.

if only moving a short distance, I'd get a J/Y pump.

i was able to get a Spectra brand fuel pump. Installed it and turned the key and a few seconds later started no problem. Airtex may have just had a bad batch. Just a heads up for those that might be replacing theirs. Thanks for the info though guys, appreciate it.
