I build old school "American Steel". Mostly A's and T's. Always wanted to do a straight axle gasser. Just traded a 20r yota motor for a 72 Comet Gt. I have a couple builds going but my 6 brain cells are hyperfocused on a 72 Comet Gasser. Presently digging in and laying out my attack. So far found 3 pics of one on here. From the angle of the drag link looks like it was a pretty challenging drive. LOL Nice to know there is a place full of information and knowledge about these cars.
... don't know how much info. on here for a...72 Comet Gasser. I think it's a better choice than a Maverick...
Back in the early 1970s a local shop built a Maverick gasser that they ran out US 30 Dragstrip in IN. As I recall, they grafted a straight axle set up off a first generation Econoline van onto the front frame rails of the Maverick after hacking out the shock towers & stock front suspension. It was a pretty low buck effort, they used a stock 4292v/C6 out of a wrecked car and ran it stock with the iron 2bbl manifold and cast iron exhaust manifolds. The car wasn't all that fast but it sure looked cool! A boneyard 460 with a stout hydraulic cam, modern AL heads, a Performer RPM Air Gap intake, decent headers and a built C4 would weigh a lot less and make for pretty neat gasser.
"sometimes a mans survival can depend on a mere scrap of information he pics up somewhere" Clint Eastwood The Outlaw Jose Wales" LOL Found some good shots already. Now watching and learning more about these cars. I like the Comet ass end but favor the Maverick hood. Will be looking for how to reuse the Comet front lights with a Maverick grill. Mine is MIA
Cool I have a 460 with way to much money in it. 525hp X 525 ft torque sitting in a 79 Bronco. was wondering if it would put to much weight up front. Early Econoline was one of my ideas. 5 x4.5 pattern. I also have a narrowed 31 spline 9" set up with wheelie bars, coil overs and a triangulated panhard salted away. Not sure how deep I want to get into it. Still laying it out before I dive in. Have 2 builds to get out of the way before summer gets here.
I don't think the weight of the 460 is going to be a big problem if you have AL heads, intake & headers vs the stock iron parts. Given that you're building a gasser, you can also notch the firewall & install the 460 with a healthy setback (#1 spark plug centered on the centerline of the front spindles) which will help with weight distribution. Not my first choice for a canyon carver, but it will sure make for an awesome retro gasser!
Ok lets see if it worked. I would rather screw it up here then when I try to post on the open forum. If it works its what happens when you yell at the woman to bring you out some coffee and something to eat
