Swapped firing order and couldn't even get it to bump over like it wanted to start. Guess this weekend I'll pull the timing cover.
Dude, all Mavericks are "cursed". That's why it takes a special kind of person to own one in this century. Make sure you have the firing order at 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Also make sure that the distributor was stabbed with the #1 piston on the compression stroke (both valves closed).
Back to ho firing order and changed carb to another known good carb and it fired up. Have to wait til tomorrow to do any real test and tune.
Yeah I can relate to that... Once I found out a bad headlight light switch can cause no horn, brake, dash or tail lights, we've been on better speaking terms...
yeah most of us can relate when i say if our neighbors saw some of our one way conversations with our cars we might be in the looney bin.
Even if you get it running, I wouldn't expect much "performance" with 135 PSI cranking compression. I know cam events can alter it a lot, but my little 6 cylinder turbo truck has a 9.0:1 CR and cranks at 160 PSI with a (large for 235") 215°/210° roller. And she runs 23# boost on top of that...
Well the 135 was a verification it should crank. That was tested on a dead cold cylinder without opening the carb butterflies etc etc etc. Just removed coil wire and spun it over 4 times. I imagine if I actually went through the hassle of testing it correctly it would be a touch higher.
My old Comet motor ran quite nicely at 95-110 psi on every cylinder, and that was warm with carb blocked open... If I killed ignition, cranked like it didn't have any spark plugs in it(first clue it was seriously lacking)...
As Bryant said earlier, your cam timing may be off. Being off a tooth would cover all your symptoms...
I'll throw the timing light back on it this weekend and set it and see what happens. If I'm getting the same results with the other carb on it I'll go ahead and pull the timing cover and see whats going on in there. I checked in the garage last night and I have a fresh set of gaskets for everything so at least it won't cost me anything to check........except time of course lol.
