hey hows everybody doing. got some questions for you. I went to time the 302 and the timing marks are darn near invisible. there is also many more marks then the book shows, and they do not look anything like what the chiltons book shows the timing marks should be. So I ended up just timing it by sound, which is probably not the best idea.

the gears grind badly in every gear except third. reverse is horrible. the clutch freeplay is way too much and it needs to be adjusted, cannot seem to find that damn adjustment arm.

brakes pull hard left when applied. also only has about 1" of travel. the motor dies when brakes are touched in burnout.

my questions are how to time this son of a gun, where to adjust freeplay, and if I need to replace brake pads or just brake lines.

thanks for any help. sorry about all the questions first car!

heres a little video action of the ol beast. got er up to 4500

with the motor off find the timing marks and mark the number you want to set it to with white out, light color touch up paint, silver or white sharpie, finger nail polish or anything else you can get your hands on that will leave a good color mark for you to see with the timing light.
the clutch free play is adjusted on the push rod going from the z bar to the clutch fork.
a brake pull is from the front brake not having everything equal. ill assume that you have drum brakes. the drum inner diameter of both drums needs to be the same. the adjustment on the brake shoes needs to be the same. worn out springs can cause it. a bad wheel cylinder can cause it also. or it could be worn out steering pieces on one side but usually not.

    thank you.

if the vaccum is the right pressure then the timing must be dead on?

I would get your base timing timed like Bryant said. Then, you can use the vacuum gauge to dial-in the carburetor. Good Luck with it, and :Welcome: to the forum!

Invest in a timing light and do it right. Without one you're shooting in the dark. Without it, if the balancer's outer ring has slipped, you'll never know it till it slips enough to throw the crank out of balance, then you'll be back here trying to figure out why the engine is shaking. Do as Bryant said and find the timing marks on the balancer and paint em (I use white chalk) to where you can clearly see them to have something to work off of. Any number of things can be used to highlite the marks once you've cleaned the rust and grime off of them. Paint it on then wipe off the excess.
