I finished getting everything back together on my maverick and it tries to turn over but won't start. It putts a couple of times and then dies. I set the the distributor at #1 and TDC at 0*. I'm not sure why it still isn't starting. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

I checked the spark and its good. Its getting fuel to the carb and I checked the firing order. They are all good.

If it backfires through the carb you may have the distributor 180 deg out.

How do I check if the distributor is 180 degrees out?

There are a couple ways to find out. You can pull the valve cover and rotate the engine while watching the #1 intake rocker arm. When the intake valve closes and the timing mark comes up to TDC the rotor should point to the #1 cyl on the cap. If its on the other side of the cap it's 180 degrees off so pull the dizzy and align the rotor to the #1 position. The other way is to just skip checking valve action and rotate the dizzy shaft 180 and see if it fires. If the problem gets worse you probably had it right the first time.

Oh. Well earlier today I set the timing mark to TDC and then set the distributor to the #1 cyl on the cap so thats not the problem. :/

Did you get TDC on the compression stroke or exhaust stroke. There are 2 TDC events in one cylinder cycle.

So the number one rocker arm, will it be up or down?

Also wouldn't another way of fixing it without taking off the valve cover be to rotate the distributor 180 degrees?

As the intake rocker comes back up while rotating, watch for TDC to come up on the balancer. And yes, you can just rotate the dizzy and see if it works. That is the second way I suggested.

pull the #1 plug, rotate the engine with your finger over the plug hole (not in it) until you feel the compression pushing your finger off the hole. then bring it on up to TDC on the timing mark...just did this yesterday.

I pulled the #1 plug and rotated the engine like you said to do and the distributor was set correctly. So the timing is correct. Maybe something else thats keeping it from starting? I just cleaned the spark plugs
