When I took the engine out I disconnected the engine from the transmission. I believe the red fluid that came out was transmission fluid but want to make sure. Can anyone tell me if it was and if so what kind do I need to refill it?

If it is the original not rebuilt C4 it will take type F fluid.

If it's a rebuilt C4 it still takes F fluid...

The F doesn't hold up over the long haul like the later types but give a little firmer shifts... I have a original(does have a shift kit installed) AOD that got nothing but F for nine years and over 700 drag strip passes, still shifts fine, may stick it in the Comet one of these days...

When my C4 was rebuilt with a shift kit and new converter, the rebuilder specified Dextron .... only GM stuff in my whole car .... really irritated me to be told that too ... :(

Not sure what you are referring to when you say "Linkage". If you pulled the tranny off the engine without unbolting the torque converter, fluid could leak out of the converter snout. It could also be coming from the uncapped cooler lines or from the tailshaft housing since there is no driveshaft installed.

But it isn't better, just more slippery so shifts are softer... You can bet my fresh built C4 is running F...

When racing many of the guys that build turbo 350s use F, or some variation of which includes the aftermarket fluids like B&M Trick Shift...

The torque converter. I've heard of it referred to as the linkage. How much is needed to refill the torque converter?

I had a buddy that had his Chevy Slidro-matic trans rebuilt. They told him to use Type F in it.

I guess it is up to the rebuilder's preferance. I, too, heard that it was slicker than Type F. Maybe it really is to soften it up, because when you get it on, the trans in my car doesn't seem like there is any slack there. It would be obnoxious if it was this harsh all the time. It really is easy to live with when you are just cruising. The combo of his work and the fluid feels intentional.

You're going to need to add approx how much you lost, then add till it on the full mark when running and at operating temp... Every book out there will tell you to use the stick to determine when full...

No linkage I know of has any thing to do with fluid level in any automatic trans, by any mfgr...

I know how to fill the transmission fluid... What I dont know is if the torque converter will fill when I fill the transmission fluid or do I have to fill the converter directly before I connect the engine back to the transmission.

(I know how to check the fluid level with a dipstick, dipstick.)
