Hello, after spending a few hours I finally gave up. I've replaced almost every part of the power steering system in my 71 Maverick with the exception of the power steering pump. Still no luck, the p/s won't work either to the left or to the right. Before working on this, i had disconnected the hoses for months, and drove the car around like that. The car sits in the garage most of the time but i'm sure there is a lot of air in the system. Yesterday I replaced the control valve (from autozone) I did not adjust the nut (end cap). I assumed it is already adjusted. What am I missing? 1. I tried bleeding the system, no luck. I did about 5 turns left/right with the wheels up (motor running). 2. I took the car for a drive and there is no response at all from the p/s. It started leaking from somewhere around the control valve area. I'm not going to convert to manual steering for now, since i have already invested on all pats. I appreciate your expertise.
Yes, the cylinder is also new. And yes i left the belt on when i disconnected the hoses? do you think the pump is bad?
I was thinking the same thing. I had a leak a long time ago amd let it run dry. By the time I got around to fixing the leak the pump was toast.
Yeah, that makes sense. i just figured since i don't drive the car much...it'll be ok. That is the only part i have not replaced. I actually have the rebuild kit for it, but getting the pulley out of the pump was a real PIA, so i gave up.
They make a special puller for the pulley. They are fairly inexpensive. If you dont want to buy one, Auto Zone and Advance has them i the loaner tool program.
I take my pump inside the store....and "borrow" it right on the spot!! Rodes Restorations in Gallion, Ohio is your friend. They specialize in power steering systems.
