Axel removal and backing plate removal

    Ok, before I waste money and get in way over my head. Is removing the axels and the backing plate just pull and replace? Is there a way to mess it up or cause damage?

    Pretty straight forward. I try and not slide the axle across the seal or the end into the tube.

    Will it go back in as easily? How does it go back in? Will I need any parts?

    My bad I thought I added all that…

    Just changing the backing plate.


    Can the anchor pin just be replaced instead?

    What year is your car (what rearend)? Why would you replace back-plates? They don't wear out.

    What are you trying to do? Replace axle seals & bearings? You need to be more specific for us to be able to help you.

    The could get damaged in a wreck or car falling off jack stands or rust if sitting in the dirt for years...the list can get long. Brake shoes can wear a hole in them too if never greased when replacing the shoes.

    Sorry thought I added all that… Just changing the backing plate.
    Would like a longer anchor pin.

    Well you don't need to remove the axles to do that. There are 4 bolts that hold the back-plate on. Disconnect the brake lines from the wheel cylinders, and the parking brake cables. Don't really see how you could mess anything up.

    But you still have to remove the axle to get the backing plate off of the axle tube and the new one on :)

    As Crazy Larry nentions, the backing plate is straight forward removal and you will also need to bleed the rear brakes when you are finished putting the new plate on - get yourself an axle puller and unbolt the axle retaining plate and the axle should come right out

    Doh! What was I thinking??

    But yeah, back-plate removal is easy.
