So I got up early, and headed to the shop this morning. I couldn't sleep in (never do, anyway) Just had to get this thing running right. As I mentioned before, I knew the carb had major issues ... I decided to start there. Pulled it off, and apart for a soaking in the Berrymans ... - - - - When I pulled off the Dist vacuum, I got spray with fuel .... - - - - - - - - More "Ghetto-Fab" work ..... - - - - Float tabs were almost 'crimped' around mounts ... no droop ... - - - - - - After a few minutes in Blast Caninet, the cap and plugs are new again. The plugs 'were' new to begin with, just sooty ... - - - - - - Again, the Batt to Solenoid cable might be a little short ... - - - -
I removed the points, and the plate. The bottom of the dizzy was nice and clean, lubed up the weights. I ran a compression test, and was pleased it was at least even across the board .... - - One screw had to be drilled out ... rusty and snapped off .... - -
Well, In between customer builds, I was able to get back on the Carter ... Man that thing way off ... Running a little rich was an understatement !! The seller told me "I don't think my buddy did a good job" Here are some of the highlights ... how's this for float adjustments ?? - - - - - - Wonder why this thing had so many manifold vacuum ports ... one in spacer plate, and three other at this junction. I know the vacuum valve on the t-stat housing used two in and one to dizzy, but still. Regardless, I removed the vac manifold and replaced with a pipe plug. - - - Soaking in ChemDip, water blast, then to blast cabinet ... - - - - - I had to make a gasket for the stud plate .... used sockets are "hole punchers" .... Then a rotary sander to open up center hole to mark. - - - - - -
Suggestion to soak the parts again after blasting - those pulverized glass beads get right into the rough surface of cast parts and then come out when you don't want them to
Every port was blown with air, then blasted with cleaner, then air again .... numerous times. Its clean .... FOR SURE ! Although I cant rope them all, this isnt my first rodeo ....
Hey guys, it's been a while since an update (well, that is because there isn't one ) After building the carb, it just sat at my shop taking up space, so I brought it home, and parked it in the garage. My buddy gave me some skinny ww tires to use as temporay vintage look tires. Now, Looking for some tiny caps for it now .... The previous owner had installed some Monroe, overload-spring shocks in the rear ... and now I know why. - - - - - -
After mess'n around with 3" blocks and removing the shocks, it came down like 5" !! My intentions are to raise the rear back up 2", then have the front tire tucked like the rear is now .... So top of tread level with top of opening in rear, and WW about an 1" under front opening - - - - - - - - - I cant here "War" playing in the background ...
