So i finally got my engine running and come to find out theirs water in my oil but i figured something like this was going to happen this being my first ever engine i rebuilt from scratch and by myself too. So i went and tore the front part of the engine apart and replaced the timing cover, water pump and fuel pump gaskets and made sure to put sealant on and put it all together. Next day i added oil fired it up and again water in my oil . Now im taking off the intake to replace those gaskets (needed to anyway cuz of a leak) but i was wondering if their was anyway of telling if the head gaskets are bad with the intake off.

If your intake seal is bad it could allow water to get into the engine, thus allowing it to mix with the oil. Unless the heads are warped or heads wernt torqed properly they should be fine.

Are they aluminum heads? Either way after a heat cycle it might not be a bad idea to re-torque the heads.

If you are not seeing any white smoke and are not over pressurizing the cooling system, I would bet it is the intake.

What type of sealer are you using? I use Permatex #2 around the water ports on the intake gasket

    Yep.. X2.

Also keep in mind that.. if this is a 302?.. there were a few different intake gaskets which can cause issues for some when used in the wrong engine combos. Kind'a like the 351 vs 302 gasket thing. I have several gasket kits which prove the point.. but can't remember what years had what water port openings.

Also, head gaskets can be put on backwards and your heads will over-heat and can warp. The gaskets have "FRONT" stamped on them and, even if they look like they're upside-down, the FRONT still needs to go to the front. This is so the cut-outs for coolant align with the block and head passageways and don't block them.

Just tore my intake off this past week due to a "mix up" in intake gaskets.. Put the wrong ones off to the side lol. Caused a tiny bit of water in my oil but not enough to worry about & it'll be changed after the break in as well.

Question for the poster, how much water is in it? With th one set of intake gaskets it will leak on all top 4 corners of intake and nothing usually inside, that is until you remove the intake.. Then it leaks in :)

Enough water leaks in to make it look like mixed up cement

Ohhh.. YUCK! That's never good for bearing life.

Run a magnet through the dumped oil.. and/or cut the filter open.. to see where you're at before spending too much time or money on it. Don't ask me how I know that.. too many painful memories.
