Will the 164 tooth cast iron bell housing fit without any issues?

I've got everything needed to plant the 302 in the Comet. That is providing this bell housing will fit OK. Inside the bell I have a steel flywheel, 164 teeth, with 28 oz balance. This is mating up to a 79 302, 3 speed manual tranny(for now). The clutch is stock, as is the pressure plate for a 79 F100.

I was going to go w/ something like a centerforce, but figured the engine is mostly stock w/ 4 barrel, intake and mild cam. My theory is the extra inch of clutch should provide enough extra grip.

Yes, it will fit. I have run that combo in my car with a toploader as well as a tremec without issue. Both with full length headmans.

    I fit a 302 with 164 tooth flywheel/bell and a toploader using a 6 cyl factory clutch linkage.

Thanks For your answers. I'm feeling better...

    Maverocket,
Did you say the tremec will fit that bell? Are you speaking of a world class T5 tranny like out of a mustang? I was thinking you had to use one of the newer bell housings...Of course I haven't measured the input shaft. How about the ID of the pilot bearing. Is it the same as my 3 speed? .

I had the input shaft machined down so I could run the older style bellhousing. The pilot is the same diameter for both.

    Hi Maverocket,
Did you go over this in another thread? I hate to rehash all this again if you have already done so, but I'm not getting it. So the pilot bushing is the same. What did you have machined? Is the input shaft longer so you had it shortened or ???

Yes, the input shaft was the same length as the T5 trans which is 1" longer than the toploader. The shaft was shortened 1" to match the older toploader bellhousing.

I think McCleod (sp?) makes an adaptor that fits between the bell housing and the 5 speed so that nothing has to be done to the input shaft.

I'm sure someone makes them. I did this swap in the late eighties.
