my 73 maverick did not have a speedo cable. I thought that it would be easy to just buy one for a 73 maverick 2 door with a 302 and a C-4 tranny but now I'm confused, in searching the internet for parts. (AUTO CRAFTERS) they have, 18 teeth, 19 teeth 20 teeth LH RH pink black yellow... How is my mind going to comprehend this complex conundrum that I have gotten my self into. I do have the gear in the tail housing. What length of cable do I buy and gear teeth, LH or RH helix? gnileekcir Thanks
I bought a universal Ford cable off the shelf at Pep Boys, just have to figure out what length you need. As for the gear, you have to know what rear gears and rear tire diameter you have.
I did some homework. Thanks to one of the replies that I received. Here is a math equation to determine gear teeth need for your speedometer cable based on tire size, rear end gear and the teeth count on the driven gear in the tail housing of your transmission. #Drive Gear Teeth X Axle Ratio X (20168/Tire Diameter in inches) -------------------------------------------------------------------- = # Driven Gear Teeth 1001 Example: 15 teeth drive gear, 3.73 axle ratio, 28" tire diameter. 15 x 3.73 x (20168/28) = 40300 40300/1001 = 40.26 or 41 teeth
7 teeth drive gear 3.55 rear end 29 in tire dia. 7x3.55x(20168/29) =17280.69/1001= 17.26 or 17 teeth driven gear. for a Ford c-4
I had my tape upside down measuring form right to left so I can use my right hand to jot down the numbers. well 26 upside down is 92, my brain read 29. mystery solved. FYI I did put my Nissan frontier tiers on my maverick for (S and G's) ****s and giggles. and they are 33's they fit. it was tight real tight, not practical or functional but they fit. If I knew how to add pictures I would show it to you guys.
In my defense I'm 53 and it takes me a few day to figure out how to send pictures. so here they are. I hope.
