I was working in Kirbyville Texas last week, and as I was passing back through the town headed home, lo-and-behold there was a '72 grabber waiting to pull out into traffic. I slowed down and let him pass me, and it sounded pretty healthy. I followed it up to the filling station he pulled into and got out to talk. Really friendly guy. The car needed some cosmetics, but what it lacked in show it made up for in go. We were talking trannys and he was commenting on how much he liked the way his C-4 shifted. He asked if I had a few minutes and I did, so he took me for a ride. This car runs 11.9 through the quarter with a 289. No nitrous. 289, built c-4, stall, and 4.11's. This thing would get it. No question, me and my maverick don't want none. He had just recently slung a rod in 347 with a 200 shot. Had a dent in the hood too. This guy was in his 60's, and in conversation he said he didn't get to drive the car as much as he'd like to. Said the only reason he was in it that day was because somebody in a brown camaro said they thought they could take him. He looked at me and was just as serious as could be- he said, and I quote "and I just can't have that kinda talk circulatin" I wished him luck and we exchanged contact #s. Just thought I'd share with ya'll. I thought it was neat. And by far the fastest car I have ever been in. Ya'll take care. Preston
289's are great. in 1976, my '67 Fairlane was a high 11 second car with a 289. I had a bumper sticker made for my 396 and 454 buddies to see on the back of my car. It read, "How Does It Feel To Beat By A 289?"
Yep, I told him about both boards and the roundup, but he doesn't do computers. I did get his contact numbers though, so we'll be in touch. Maybe I'll learn something........ Preston
Very good story! I used to have a 289 with a 4 speed in my car back in the eighties ...I had alot of fun with it ,but it was nowhere near that fast!
Ya does sound pretty cool.. You guys should go to round up together and stuff.. Even have him drive few states away won't take long in his car
