I've been hearing some quite noise lifter chatter from the 302 in the Lincoln lately
Changed the oil and filter and it didn't help at all.

Thought that the motor was a flat tappet motor but turns out its a roller.

I pulled the lifters and they look good. Rollers spin free and they all have a ton of pressure on the cup.

Anything else I should look for?
Could it have been lash causing the noise? All the pedastal bolts were torqued down real hard.......

What is the correct lash procedure for non adjustables and torque?

The 302 has gt 40 3 bars on it.

Bolt them down to like 20-25ft lb and forget it...

If there is too much lash use a longer push rod or trim the bottom of the pedestal(need to be able to cut it square, not lopsided)... For increasing lash there are shims available...

When you put the gt40's on did you check push rod length? The is no valve adjustment, just torque the rocker arms to 17ft-lbs.

I didn't install the motor or heads. Bought it like that. Just noticed that on a few of the pushrods I can move them up and down slightly with the rockers torqued down. Anyone know correct push rod length?

Only way to know the correct length for your engine is to get the length checking tool. It's pretty much an adjustable push rod and a dummy rocker arm.

No one locally has any longer pushrods then what I have. Can I just remove the rocker arm square channel deal to increase preload?

Stock pushrod length for a roller engine is 6.27"...

Does the chatter go away once the engine warms up? If so, ignore it.

If it keeps chattering, dig in deeper.

Is it on all exhaust pushrods, or all intakes, or just on random ones?

Also (sorry for all the questions...), what kind of rockers do you have?

If there are shims under the rockers now...You could remove em and see what you get...Your best bet is proper length push rods...Many cam manufacturers offer custom length push rods...You just need to know what size you need.

As mentioned above.. many mfgrs carry them in .050 increments.

I would just measure what you have and see if the spacer can be deleted to eliminate the clearance. Or order up another that's .050 longer than what you have.. tighten it down and forget about it.

Unless this slop is really excessive?.. a +.050 longer PR should still give you in the neighborhood of 1/4 turn(around .020) lifter preload which is more than fine. I run 1/8 turns all the time on hydro roller cams since they don't wear/gain clearance like flat tappets.

Chatter does not go away. Cant really hear it at idle but other then that always there. Doesn't sound like all the lifters but I will gave to run it with the covers off to see which ones exactly are the culprit.
    Have stock style pedastol rockers.

Just ran the motor with the valve cover off. All of the rockers are ticking. If I apply a little pressure with the handle of my hammer it will quiet them up.

It didn't seem to take much pressure at all with the handle to push the lifters down while running. When the car was off I could barely move the lifter cup at all with a ton of pressure.

    Any ideas.

The one rocker I think I am hearing the most has a lot of movement. All of the other rockers are pretty tight but one has a lot more slop. That lifter didn't seem any different then the other so could it possibly be a worn rocker arm ?

Ok call of the search. Dont know how I missed this in the first place but the rocker that was really loose has a broken valve spring....... I'm guessing that when the Cam was put in and the GT40's they used the stock GT40 springs with a 525 lift cam....... found a whole set of dual springs for a sbf on craigslist brand new for 60 bucks so I'm gonna go grab those.

Don't just grab any set of springs. Figure out what are recommended for your cam and order them to the correct specs.

They are going to have specific pressures and amounts of movement that are matched to your cam.

Glad you found that semi-obvious problem.
