So I keep hearing this chatter come from the universal joint area of the maverick.
Only happens when the clutch first engages. Thought it was a bad u joint but it looks and feels fine. Had a buddy drive the car while I looked and I can see the driveshaft st the u joint cbatterbwhen the clutch is first engaged. Forwards or backwards does the same.
Could it be the clutch / pressure plate?

Replace both u joints. That will take care of the problem.

Clutch.....flywheel...and throw out bearing all new. I'll re check the u joints and report back. I was thinking that maybe the flywheel was causing it somehow.....I'm pretty much lost on this one.

It wouldn't be the clutch or you would have trouble shifting. Grab the end on the drive shaft near the rear end and move it up and down. If there is any play than bad u joints.

Take the drive shaft out of the car and see how the u joints feel. excessive loosness or tight spots when you rotate em...There bad. If not...is the clutch properly adjusted...Improper clutch adjustmant will cause it to chatter. Good luck!!!

The clutch has fealt pretty good. I'm not going to say its adjusted perfectly but it seems to be working fine the way it is now.

Some how someway the rod that actuates the clutch got a little tweaked so that isn't doing me any favors. I will check both u joints again today and see what I can come up.

The tailshaft bushing is in the tailshaft housing. You have to remove the tailhousing from the transmission to service the bushing. I have seen the cheap clutch kits cause this vibration problem. Expect to pay close to $350+ for a decent clutch kit. The $150 kits are junk

Had a bad universal joint I replaced. Chatter still there. Noticed when I pulled the drive shaft that I have some plat in the input to the rear end......I can rotate it back and forth a bit without actually engaging the rear end. How much of a problem is that?

Bet that was...interesting! Couple years ago, I saw a mid 70's F-100 driving down the road with the hood open and a guy sitting on the PASS side fender tinkering with the carb...

the pinion will rotate a few degrees with out moving the tires. their is a gap between the ring and pinion and a gap in the spider side gear and even a gap in the axle splines and side gears. it tricky to distinguish between the normal loose feel of the rotation and actual bearing looseness which will have an in and out feel and or an up and down feel. usually if the pinion seal is not leaking then their is no excessive slop in the bearings.
chances are your chatter is clutch chatter. bad motor mounts and trans mounts can cause some clutch chatter or a bad clutch can cause it.
