Hello All, This is my first posting on this site. My son (17 Years old) picked up a 71 Maverick as a project car about 10 days ago. To say that some of the previous work done on it is sketchy would be an understatement. The car has a Ford 302 in it reportedly from a 83 Mustang. It does have an overheating problem, and I am concerned the water pump may be wrong. The AC, power steering, an other components are all removed and there is a simple ribbed belt connecting the water pump and alternator to the Cam Shaft. Looking at the specs from the 83 'Stangs, I'm not quite sure if the water pump should turn in the same direction as the CS or the opposite direction (with a serpintine belt). How can I tell if the current pump is standard or reverse flow?
Welcome... The reverse rotation pumps have a wider bolt pattern than does the CW pumps, so if you are using orig pulleys you should be OK(check number on water pump pulley, orig should begin with D0 or D1)... All V belts setups are CW rotation, serpentine can be either... Here's difference in patterns, orig fan on CCW pump...
