I have 3 problems, I'll go through them one ata time. 1)I have a 1975 mav with a 250. There is severe hesitation when pressing the accelerator. Checked the distributer, cables, plugs, vaccume, timming, the carb has been rebuilt twice. No luck. Anyone have any ideas? 2) Where can I buy a new harness. The one that connects to the alternator and battery. 3) Can an exhaust header be welded. I need to remove an emissions diverter and there are three holes to be plugged? Thanks for any replies.
I would suggest getting new repop manifold. The new ones don't have the smog stuff on them. Do a search on the subject as I had a thread about it.
Welcome aboard! We like pictures... First of all swap to a GM one wire alternator. It eliminates the nest of wires. Severe hesitation sounds like the carb. Sorry.
#1. Sounds like accelerator pump is out of adjustment or worn out. #2. No new replacement harness available (post a want ad in the parts wanted section of the forum) Someone will have what you need #3. Cast iron can be braised (backyard repair) It can be welded if done properly by a pro. If its a steel tube header it can easily be repaired if you have some welding skill and the tools.
from Northeast Pennsylvania If that "emmissions diverter" holes were threaded holes for bolts or pipe plugs just install the fasteners back in the threaded holes and tighten them up. If not threaded, cast can be welded.
to the board.... I had a bad hesitation when I first purchased my Comet. It had 53,000 miles on it. All city driving. Was really carboned up. I bought a can of seafoam & followed the directions. I had an instant fix & no more hesitation. Be ready for alot of white smoke. I thought someone was going to call the fire department, it smoked so bad, for about 5 minutes...
Thanks to all who replied. Sorry for the delayed response. The carb was rebuilt twice in 3 weeks, therefore , the pump should have been replaced.......correct? The emissions diverter fasteners have a hole at the tip of it so the emission travels through it and into the pipe. A strange set up. I might use a bolt with a copper washer? As far as the harness is concerned, i purchased some new connectors ( only 6$ ) to see if this will eliminate the issue. If not I will probably go with new alternator with one connection. Thanks for your help everyone. Please reply with any other ideas. Im not to savvy with engines as you can tell. So all help is greatly appreciated.
