I have a chrome housing. I am using gaskets and sealeant to seal it. It will seal for several months and then start leaking agn. I just look at an AK catalog and see the chrome model has an O-ring type seal. Im not sure if the one on my car has this type seal and I been using the wrong stuff to seal it. I am/was not familiar w/ this type of O-ring setup. I was out of the car hobby for decades and I don't recall them existing then. Anyway, I was doing some cosmetic work on the car today. I wud have gone to a car show and wud have had to deal w/ leaking coolant if it had not been my wifes birthday and had dinner reservations. I gess/know I was lucky; I did'nt get on the freeway and discover the leak. I thought I had the problem fixed a few months when I put on a new coolant pump. Guess not. I plan to remove the housing tommorrow and see if it takes an O-ring and if it don't - may/probably go w/ the gasket type. Tired of fixin the same leak. Any thoughts/suggestion?
The chrome ones are always a pia to seal, I always made sure that the chrome was not on the sealing surfaces by sanding it off, o ring type are not much better if any. I just use a stock housing
Thanks for the heads-up guys. Im removing it tommorrow and going w/ what I used in the past and painting it like the rest of the engine, blue, cept for the mating surface. The last time I "called myself fixing it" was the 3rd time. Three times is 3 times to many... gettin ride of the POS housing. It was on the car when/since I've owned it.
I trashed my leaky chrome one to.... I bought a good one from a mustang house and it's perfect now...
X 2 on this fix. It's not the seal surface itself, but the chrome that's the problem, it's too slick to get a seal with. Sand it off and it's good to go.
I have the same problem with a plain aluminum one on my car. Water is all drained out now, so what can I do before I fill it up to make it stop leaking? Slow leak, but there is a puddle above the water pump when I let it sit for a while. Mine is the straight up 5.0 one, but same issue. I assume the same fix.
