I have a '70 Mav' with the small 4 bolt drum brakes up front. I have a '73 Comet with the bigger 5 bolt drums. Can anyone tell me if I can just remove the 4 bolt drums from the spindle,(without removing the spindle from the car) and place the five bolt drums on the 4 bolt drum spindle? Or is that too much to ask :) I mean, I'm thinking the spindle from the '73 is probably thicker, or longer, or something! that would make this easy task impossible, right. Please let me know if anyone knows, I really dont want to tear off the drum & find out there's no way the two are interchangable.

Your asking to much. If you want to change to 5 lug you need to replace the axle itself. The 4 lug axle will not work. The bottom line is save yourself alot of grief and replace the whole unit.

6 cyl spindles are smaller than V8 spindles.

Yeah,...that makes sense, heavier engine, thicker-bigger axles. But then again, those car companies dont always use the high priced brains they pay for.:rofl2:

The high priceed brains saved them money and that's what every company wants to do. They had to keep the price down on a new model less than $2000 and that's what they did by using parts on hand.

    I should had said 4 lug spindles...not 6 cylinder spindles. I have a six with 5-lugs.
