I got off at 1:00pm today and I thought that I would start taking off the cowl vents. I started off by removing the fenders, I was in for a scary shock. The cowl was completely gone on the driver side and where the floorpan meets the firewall was rusted comletely through. I'm afraid that alot of you guys told me so, but I was optimistic until today and having seen all this damage, I'm afraid that the car is beyond repair which is to bad cus I really wanted to repair it but no luck. This one will have to get cut up and the good parts put away in storage.
Ok now from a Canadians point of view.We are use to repairing very rusty cars here.Last year i replaced the whole firewall and a roof skin on a 1988 Mustang. You may say WHY?? Well solid rust free cars here are few and far between and the guy was deep into the car to abandon it.So i have a couple of questions for you. 1-What is the rest of the car like? 2-Can you weld? 3-Are you willing to try? 4-Do you like the car enough to fix it? What's the worst that can happen? You try an fix it and it doesn't turn out? Or you can fix it the best that you can and sell it off, recoup some cash, then see if you can locate a better car. Heck if the rest of the car isn't that bad i would give it a shot.
Just take the cowl off and put a solid piece on it making all the water run to the sides. Hasn't that been done on here before? Just cut all that rusted crap out and bypass it. Of course, I hate and refuse to do bodywork, so I am just talking trash here...
the trunk and the rest of the car looks pretty good the roof isn't that bad the rust spots came from the hood coming open and dent the roof section with the vinly on the roof the sections rusted no big deal I can fix that. * I can weld and have welded sheetmetal and auto panels * I'm willing to try the repair and have knowledge in auto panel replacement. * I like the car its a Maverick Grabber enough said!!!!!
"the guy was deep into the car to abandon it." how deep could he be into a rust bucket like this? 1988 ...:16suspect...
Well the problem first started when he bought a car for too much money and didn't take anyone along (namely me) to see it first. Then after a few repairs and changes he made the dollar value was getting up there. We all tried to tell him that he was wasting his money but he was still excited about his new pro street Mustang. Then he wanted me to paint it and when the grinder hit it the white dust flew and the car showed it's true face. A quick run down of what i know that he has invested $6500 for car $1200 for Aluminum rad, msd, new carb and intake $1500 or so on rear end gears axles, and spool (the car came with welded axles) And probably more i'm missing Right now i figure he has about $35,000 into a $10,000 car. Here's some pics right after i finished it.
Wow... you can pick up mostly rust free 80's 4 banger Foxes for a dime a dozen in these parts. I gave $150 for my '80 Capri RS, no rust anywhere in sight on the car, all original with the spare tire still in the back and owners manual in the glove box. Had a blown up 2.3, guy said he couldn't bring himself to send the car to the crusher.
I bought the car for under $600.00 and I have a 77 donor car with floor pans and roof sections and all the sheetmetal is decent shape better than the 72. I paid $450.00 for the 77 and it has a 250 with front disk brakes and the interior is in great shape. So, if I part out my 77 the parts that I'm not going to use to fix the 72 I should be ok. I know that I can do the work. Thanks Derek for support. :bananaman
I had looked at the pics of your 72. It's got a look to it i dunno what but there is something ''right'' about that car.I hope you save it.
