hey guys, need some more help. my maverick runs a little rough. the engine sputters while i drive and at idle. it runs perfect on acceleration and when i slow down, but every other time it sputters. any thought? i think it might be timing but i dont have a timing light to check. :16suspect

If you have a 12 volt test light the timing can still be checked. I'll look for that procedure because I know it is going to picque someone's curosity. Later Dude!

fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, wires, air filter, fresh oil, are all new. i dont have a test light either but i might be able to get one. i was just seeing if there was anything i might have over looked or if this was a common problem. i have the owner's manual with the correct timing listed. just tryin' to get it in tip top shape, im getting ready to put her up for sale.

Check for a stuck EGR valve
Check the EGR plate itself for cracks or burns
    Check for vacuum leaks

Mine was actually doing the same and after checking out the dist. cap, found one of the hold down clips was pretty loose thus not holding the cap down securely. Checked the inside of the cap and was where the rotor was rubbing on the plastic. Fixed the clip, changed caps and all is well.(y)

mine did that a couple weeks ago turned out to be a bad condenser. also adjust your carb make sure your air/fuel screw isnt shut or wide open idle too low etc.

Check your coil and check the engine ground to the body and frame.

Since it runs well when accelerating, fuel problems are out. Check your point gap, if it has points, and the condenser. If you are running an electronic ignition then points problems are out but wiring connections, wires rubbing on metal and wearing through the insulation are good places to start. By all means check for good ground connections. Check for a worn breaker plate that allows gaps to change as the vacuum advance is working. Since the problem disappears under loads it isn't a problem with carbon tracking, plugs or plug wires - they would get worse under load.

wiring is probly the culprit, i had to replace my battery cables and just went over the engine bay to clean it up. hoses and wires are lookin' a little brittle. thanks for the tips. (y)

haha, now that i have found the old wires may be the prob. i'll have to avoid the topic with dad. he help me put on my fuel pump, and filter along with the other usual tune up stuff (air filter, plugs, wires) when i thought it was a fuel thing and he suggested electrical about 6 months ago....
