The lastest Mustang & Fords magazine has a great article in there to tell you how calibrate your speedometer. Mine has been way off with the 3:89 gears and 255R60x15 tires. I did the math and came up with the proper gear by their chart. Went to Ford yesterday and picked up the gear for $8. By the calculations, mine should be running 63mph at 3000rpm. It used to be in the high 70's. Now reads around 61.5. Thats close enough for me. I should have done this 3 years ago.
Yeah, I need to do the same thing...mine's off pretty bad too. Guess I better get her back on the road first though. Still workin on that part.
hey speaking of speedometers......how hard is it to replace the cable......The one in mine broke at the transmission....the one on my spare is in good shape.......haven't had time to dig into it yet....just finishing my tranny rebuild......does it just screw into the panel under the dash or is it more complicated than that?? Thanks Jeremy
It just pushes in the back of the speedometer and is held in with a plastic clip. If its ever been removed before, the plastic clip is probably long gone. It will stay without the clip though.
I couldn't get one that close for my 3.80 gears and 245/60r15s. I am still two teeth off, but at least I am within 5-7 mph rather than off by 12. There is a website where I can get the gear I need, but I have heard that the teeth are at such an angle that they will wear out within 10,000 miles or so.
I thought I was the only one... I had a dash light go out and after an HOUR of dinkin with that little clip I took a pair of pliers and busted one side... Been like that since about 2000, drove it 2 more years before I started cutting the car to pieces.
With my 3.89 gears my speedometer only reads about 3 mph high, according to all the roadside radar traps. Don't think I'm gonna get any closer than that.
I think mine was black also. I need to find one of those roadside radar thingies and check it out. I may be closer than I thought. Isn't that black one the smallest that Ford sells? I could find one that was smaller, but it was not through Ford and had that tooth wear issue. edit--er, larger gear, as Mavaholic corrected me below...
Good info in that mag this time. Article about the Ring brothers. I saw their stuff in Springfield IL. Not bragging here,, just stating what our cars can do to people. Mike Ring saw my car staging to get into the Route 66 Festival. He searched the entire downtown Springfield area to find my car. We talked, he really liked my car, I really LOVED his car!! Anyways,, I thought it was a very nice gesture by him to seek out a Maverick. Mike is a really nice guy and just like the rest of us when it comes to cars. Before I talked to him I found his car and was just all over it,, he did to his stang what I want to do to my Spoiler. Guess in the end is,, people get your cars out at the major events. There are people who really want to see different stuff. Guess I hijacked this thread.. sorry buddy,, but the flywheel stuff in the mag is great info too. Dan
There are different part numbers for a manual and automatic gear. Mine is manual. According to the article, 21 is the highest count. The more teeth, the slower the speedo turns.
