Im removing my rear end to get it ready for cleaning and rebuilding. I have this wire cable going into the drums and cant figure out how to remove it to free the rear end. Any recommendations would be helpful. I am converting the rear to disc so not sure if i even need that anymore.
I did and still wasnt able to pull it out. Do i need to completely diss- assemble the drum brake part for me to be able to pull it out?
Parking brake cable for a disc brake setup will be different... Old cable(s) should be easy enough to remove from under the car, there's a clamp at front of spring and usually disconnects at equalizer around mid point under car... If you decide to leave it under car, usually a 1/2" boxed wrench can be slid over the cable retaining fingers inside drum to compress them and it just pulls out...
I used to remove them with clamp and it does work, but every since I used a 1/2" boxed end wrench that worked just as well that's how I've removed mine...
Hose clamp, thats a great idea. Hopefully one of those methods will work. Ill be givin it a go today. Thanks guy.
The boxed end of a 12 point ½" combination worked for me... I suppose there are some back plates that may be shaped so axle flange interferes with fitting the wrench onto the cable retainer fingers, so off set may be better... If it fits too snug a 13mm would be a good bet... I originally tried the wrench years ago because I didn't want to get out from under car to get a clamp... I'll be replacing my brake cables soon(one is all but broken), may be after holidays but I already have new ones... I'll report on my results...
Well guys I have to apologize... I tried a ½" on a new brake cable and it's too small, apparently I used a 9/16 as it fits(haven't repl a brake cable in probably 20 years)... In checking metric, a 13mm is also too small but a 14 fits nicely, of course those are just slightly smaller than 9/16... If one were changing these on a regular basis, a piece of steel tubing with correct bend(s) would likely make a good tool...
i tried and couldnt get it so i ended up just cutting it haha. I needed to replace them anyways and its different now since im adding the disc brakes so i said BYEEEE lol
