Greetings, this is gonna be a dumb question I know... but as my car is a 1971 I do not think it had egr... SO what are the... two extra lines running into my air cleaner? One comes from some bulky ass contrption at the rear passenger side of the engine bay which I can only theorize is part of the heater system. The other matches up perfectly with a hole on the exhaust manifold. On this note... does anyone know where I can pick up a haynes manual for this car?
Haynes Manual??? Since Sears stopped printing their catalog, I find those best suited for the outhouse... What you are looking at are the fresh air pickup for the choke and likely the charcoal canister that traps fuel vapor from the gas tank...
Hey! I still like Haynes better than Chilton. But to my knowledge, Haynes doesn't make one for Mavs. I have one for Mustang IIs and it has been my go-to for many of my projects.
I bought a Haynes to rebuilt my transmission in my Ranger pickup. The Haynes book said take the transmission to a professional because it is too difficult to rebuild. The best repair book is Motors Manual or the Shop Manual
Alright thanks guys, I actually did evenually figure it out, and bickering aside, I cant seem to find shop manual for it. Found a thread on this website stating that 71 only got a generic manual!
I have a Haynes Rebuilding Ford Transmissions Manual. Covers several different transmissions, not just the C series. Complete tear-down and rebuild, if you need it.
Alright I have a few MORE noob questions, please keep in mind this is my first ever car older than a 2000... Today I tore off the 1 barrel carb, valve covers, etc, I coud identify most of what was attached (shift linkage, throttle cable, vacuum to dist, etc) but the fuel line puzzled me... It was obviously a fuel line, what with the fuel filter and hardlines... but what is that beastly contraption attached to the engine ? I assumed mechanical fuel pump, which raises the question... I was gonna convert it to an electrical pump... would I simply toss the mechanical and cover the hole? What size of a bolt is the dist held on by? I thought 5/16 but I didnt have a wrench and a socket just wasnt gonna work. What is the electrical wire running from an unidentified area behind the valve cover to the carb? I theorized something to do with the choke system, I watched a teardown video of it and it didnt have it. The wire did seem stock though as it was held down by one of the valve cover bolts. The previous owner wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed if you know what I mean and stated she "rebuilt the carb" which considering the gasket disintegrated when I removed it... I removed the charcoal canister, and its bracket. Put "vented gas cap" on the shopping list, can I now work backwards and remove that hardline it was attached with once I have it on jackstands? FINALLY, the water pump has four lines as I could see: Upper Rad Hose, Lower Rad Hose, and two coolant lines running back through the firewall to the heater core, If I am removing the heater core, is it considered safe to simply loop the hose? And finally... how hard is it to get at the windshield wiper motors?
My "best guess" answers are in RED. From everything I've read and pic's posted around here.. it's a PITA to get the motor out from underneath the dash.
1/2" distributor wrench is money well spent. To remove the wiper motor is not that hard of a job, it will take about 45 minutes to remove and replace...turn on the wipers and kill the ign switch when the wiper arms are half way through their travel. This will let you get a wrench on the bolts. Disconnect the battery negative ground cable. Remove lower package tray and radio. Loosen the 3 bolts holding the motor to the bracket with a 3/8" gear wrench but do not remove the bolts yet. Remove the retaining clip at the linkage and unplug the electrical harness. Finish removing the 3 bolts. I might be easer to remove the speedometer cluster to help shine a little light on the subject. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/chassis_electrical_02.html#a
Alright guys i got most of it figured today! Im dropping the whole fuel system so sealing the old vent line wont be an issue. I ****ed with the carb a bit and the electrical line seems to be attached to a solenoid which when it opens depressed on the bowl and opens the butterfly... Weird but nothing to major. As for the standard tools, i bought a 300 piece set with 1/4 3/8 and half inch drive and sockets up to a full inch haha
